Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 08-03-15 at 3:38 a.m., Officer Ben Wagnon and Officer Shane Hart made a traffic stop on a vehicle at the intersection of Werner Avenue and Vale Street. The vehicle was stolen from San Francisco. The driver, a 28-year old San Francisco resident, had large quantity of methamphetamine in his possession. He was arrested for vehicle theft, possession of a controlled substance for sale and for an outstanding bench warrant.

On Monday, 08-03-15 at 8:08 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Northgate Avenue on a report of a subject who jumped over a fence and into a resident’s backyard. The resident saw the subject and yelled at him. The subject then jumped over another fence, and officers found him at Glenwood Avenue and Lake Merced Boulevard. The subject couldn’t provide a reason for being in the victim’s backyard. The 23-year old transient subject advised that he may have a warrant out of Tulsa Oklahoma for a sex offense. Officers arrested the subject for failing to register as a convicted felon sexual offender, failure to register within 30 days, and for entering a non-commercial dwelling without consent.

On Wednesday, 08-05-15 at 6:53 a.m., Officer Victor Cabatic and Officer Dave Farrar were dispatched to John Daly Boulevard and the entrance to the Westlake Shopping Center on a report of a vehicle blocking traffic. Two San Francisco P.D. officers were driving in the area and noticed the vehicle was stalled and missing a left front tire. The officers advised that the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs and then contacted our dispatch center. Our officers arrived on scene and asked if the subject had any alcohol to drink, and the driver said he didn’t drink and that he had “smoked weed a while ago”. When the officers asked the driver what day and time it was, the subject thought it was Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The officer noted that the subject was very drowsy, along with another subject in the vehicle. The officers conducted field sobriety tests on the driver to determine if he was under the influence, and the driver could not perform the tests satisfactorily. The officer also found a Xanax pill on the driver’s seat. The driver, a 21-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and for driving under the influence of a controlled substance. The passenger, also a 21-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

On Wednesday, 08-05-15 at 2:36 p.m., Detective William Tone was driving an unmarked police vehicle on Eastmoor Avenue near Edgemont Drive when he observed a vehicle directly in front of him roll through the stop sign. Detective Tone checked the license plate and determined the vehicle was stolen in San Francisco the day before. The detective notified an officer from the “San Mateo County Vehicle Theft Task Force” who was working nearby and kept following the vehicle until the officer arrived when they attempted to stop the vehicle. The officer got out of his vehicle, and as the detective was exiting his vehicle, the driver of the stolen vehicle immediately reversed his vehicle and collided with the Task Force officer’s vehicle, causing the Task Force officer to fall. Detective Tone then pursued the vehicle onto northbound highway 280 and attempted to take the Alemany Boulevard exit until he spun around and hit a sign. The subject then tried to flee, but a police K-9 was called to stop him. The subject, a 32-year old San Francisco resident, was arrested for being in possession of a stolen vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, felony evading and resisting arrest.

On Thursday, 08-06-15 at 9:04 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Gellert Boulevard on a report of a vandalism in progress via a subject who was using a crowbar and hammer to destroy a window and some property belonging to a business. A nearby employee saw the subject who then handed the employee a note asking him to deliver it to the owner. The subject then fled the scene. The note contained a phone number, and officers were able to determine the subject’s identity. The 65-year old subject was upset about a recent eviction of his apartment in San Francisco and admitted to damaging the property manager’s business. He was arrested the following day.

Scams/Other

Sweepstakes Scam (via U.S. mail)

One of my crime bulletin readers sent me a letter she received from “Lavond Investment Inc” regarding a “Notice to Claim Winnings” for a sweepstakes. The envelope was addressed from Canada, yet the address of the investment company was in New York. Along with the letter was a check from “Otis Elevator” based out of Arizona written to the reader who sent me the information. The letter explained that the prize amount was $950,000.00 and the enclosed check for $5,995.00 was to be deducted from the total winnings to take care of processing charges. The letter goes on to explain that the lump sum prize is payable either as a bank draft or certified check by courier, or if the recipient would like, a “Prize Patrol Van” would present the winnings with a camera crew to advertise on television. The letter explained that the winning prize would be sent 24-48 hours after the recipient paid the “processing, shipping and handling fees” of $5,000.00. The check the company enclosed was to help pay the processing fee. In the letter is a claim agent’s name and phone number to call to “activate” the claim. I called the telephone number on the letter, and it did not exist. I don’t know what would have happened if the number was legitimate, but the letter was riddled with “type-o’s”, and it was definitely not legitimate. Please know anything that asks you to “pay” to “win” your price is a hoax.

Backpack and School Supply Drive

In partnership with Starbucks, the Town of Colma, the Daly City Partnership and the Daly City Police and Fire Departments, the City of Daly City is collecting school supplies and backpacks for school-age children. Backpacks and school supplies can be donated and dropped off at any Daly City or Colma fire station, police department or Starbucks. Monetary donations are also accepted online at www.dcpartnership.org , or by making a check donation payable to Daly City Partnership.

If you know of a child who may need assistance with school supplies, the child’s family may sign up at the Daly City Community Service Center located at 350-90th Street, Daly City. Enrollment guidelines are proof of income and residency (some South San Francisco and Brisbane families may apply if their children are enrolled in a Daly City school).

Questions about the program can be made directly to Pat Bohm, Executive Director of Daly City Partnership, at [email protected] or by calling the Community Service Center at (650) 991-8007.

Nextdoor.com

This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
