Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

**This bulletin contains two weeks of information.

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 07-20-15 at 1:08 a.m., Officer Greg Grogan stopped a vehicle at Junipero Serra Boulevard and Citrus Avenue for speeding. Officer Grogan immediately smelled an odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle as he approached it. The driver had a suspended driver's license and agreed to allow the officer to search his vehicle. The officer found a bag containing a loaded firearm and arrested the 27-year old driver from San Francisco for being a felon carrying a loaded firearm, carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle and for driving on a suspended license.

On Thursday, 07-23-15 at 12:11 a.m., Officer Cameron Newton noticed a vehicle drifting in and out of lanes on Mission Street and made a traffic stop at Mission Street and West Moltke Street. The driver said he was sorry and was trying to do his hair because he was going to a club. The driver had a suspended driver's license and consented to the officer’s request to search his vehicle. Officer Newton found a small baggie containing a white substance inside, as well as a large amount of cash folded up on the passenger seat. On the passenger side was an unlabeled pill bottle containing Adderall pills, a baggie containing Xanax pills, a baggie containing cocaine, as well as a digital scale. Officer Newton arrested the subject, a 39-year old San Leandro resident, for possession of cocaine base for sales, transportation of narcotics between counties, transportation of narcotics for sales, possession of Adderall for sales, possession of Xanax for sales, possession of a sap, possession of counterfeit bills, driving on a suspended license, and for committing a felony while out on bail.

On Saturday, 07-25-15 at 11:01 a.m., officers were dispatched to Jefferson High School on a report of a commercial alarm sounding. Officers said they saw a suspect moving inside a classroom and requested other officers to surround the perimeter. Officers found a backpack nearby and found identification inside matching the subject seen in the classroom. The subject, a 33-year old San Francisco resident, had a history involving firearms. The SWAT team was called to the scene because of the potential of the suspect having firearms, as well as the tight space (ceiling area) in which the suspect was hiding. After several hours of officers trying to make contact with the suspect, the suspect attempted to drop down from the ceiling area into an adjacent classroom. The suspect climbed back thru the broken ceiling panels and eventually crawled down a ladder the SWAT team provided to him after the negotiating officer advised he could call his mother once he came down. The subject was arrested for burglary, vandalism, receiving stolen property, possession of burglary tools and for obstructing/resisting an officer.

On Sunday, 07-26-15 at 3:10 a.m., Officer Benjamin Wagnon stopped a vehicle at on Highway 35 and Westmoor Avenue. The officer observed two subjects in the vehicle who switched seats as he approached the vehicle. Officer Wagnon asked the driver if she was the owner of the vehicle, and she said it belonged to a friend. The officer observed that the two subjects were whispering amongst themselves and were looking over their shoulders and around the vehicle. Thinking possibly that the subjects were preparing to flee, the officer asked for the ignition key. The officer then noticed that the key appeared thinner than a usual key. The officer asked the subject for the registration, and the dispatchers advised the vehicle was stolen. After the officer searched the subject and the vehicle, he arrested the driver, a 38-year old San Francisco resident, for vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of burglary tools, possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and for possession of unlawful paraphernalia (methamphetamine pipe).

On Sunday, 07-26-15 at 5:13 a.m., Officer Isaako Poti stopped a vehicle at Flournoy Street and San Jose Avenue. The officer said the driver had bloodshot watery eyes, was shaking and appeared nervous. Because the subject admitted to having two beers, the officer requested the subject to exit the vehicle to speak with him. As the officer was patting down the subject, he said the subject became upset and uttered an obscenity at a low volume. Dispatchers advised that the subject had recently been arrested for carrying a concealed firearm. Officer Poti asked the subject if he had anything illegal on his person, and the subject advised he may have a speed pipe on him. After the officer requested the subject to put his hands behind his back, the officer felt a hard object along the subject’s belt line. The subject then stated, “You’re not going to like this”. A cover officer lifted the subject’s shirt and found a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol pointing downward in the subject’s jeans. The subject, a 31-year old San Francisco resident, was arrested for carrying an unregistered, concealed, loaded and operable firearm while prohibited and out on bail.

On Wednesday, 07-29-15 at 8:24 p.m., the Bayshore Unified School District on Martin Street was the victim of arson via burning of paperwork and a mattress by two subjects. A 12-year old girl and 13-year old boy were arrested and released to their parents.

On Sunday, 08-02-15 at 9:27 p.m., officers responded to the 800 block of Bellevue Avenue on a report of a domestic violence. The victim said her husband hit her in the face with a wine bottle and then fled the residence. The victim sustained a small abrasion to her lip and a chip to her tooth. She was granted an emergency protective order, and the suspect was arrested the following day.

Scams/Other

Air Duct Cleaning Scam

This did not occur in Daly City, but it is important to mention because it could occur here. Recently in Mountain View, an elderly female victim answered a phone call from a solicitor about air duct cleaning. The caller claimed to work for “DE General Air Solution” and scheduled an appointment for cleaning. The subject showed up four days early at the residence and told the victim that the work would take three hours and cost $75. The subject referred to himself as “John” and went into the attic and came down about two hours later. The victim said “John” proceeded to tell her about the things that were wrong with her air ducts and wrote up a contract totaling $4,170. (The contract did not have a business name or license number listed.) “John” told the victim that he ordered parts that would be arriving in the mail and to call him when they arrived. The victim paid “John” in cash, and “John” left the residence never to be seen again.

Nextdoor.com

This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
