Stolen Vehicle Hit & Run Crash Leaves Man in Serious Condition
North Aurora, IL – The teen driver of a stolen pickup truck ran a red light, caused a crash and injured a Glendale Heights man before fleeing on foot. The crash happened at the intersection of River Rd. (Rt. 25) and Rt. 56 (Butterfield Rd.) at 3:20 p.m. yesterday.
A 17 year old male of the 38W300 blk of Rt. 64, St. Charles was driving a gold 2005 Dodge 1500 pickup truck southbound on River Rd. when he ran a red light and struck a green Dodge Caravan, which was going eastbound on Butterfield Rd. The male and a female passenger of the pickup fled the area on foot and were later caught by police about a half mile from the scene. The pickup was previously reported as stolen to the Aurora Police Department.
Police officers credit several alert residents in the area who called 911 to alert police as to the location of the pair fleeing on foot.
The driver has been charged with
- Unlawful Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle
- Unlawful Possession of a Converted Motor Vehicle
- Disobeying a Traffic Control Signal
- Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Crash
- No Valid Drivers License
The driver of the pickup is currently in custody at the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center.
The female passenger of the pickup was later released without charges. Traffic was delayed for several hours while the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team worked the crash scene, but the roadways remained open.
The driver of the Caravan, a 44 year old male of Glendale Heights, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Presence Mercy Hospital in Aurora by North Aurora Fire Department paramedics. He was later transferred to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove where he remains in serious condition. There were no passengers in the minivan.
The crash remains under investigation by the North Aurora Police Department and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor.
The stolen vehicle remains under investigation by the Aurora Police Department.
