Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Tuesday, 07-07-15 at 3:18 a.m., Officer Korey Sprader conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for an equipment violation on the 100 block of Byrne Street. The driver couldn’t find her license and registration and kept putting her hand between the seats of the car. The officer asked her to not reach between the seats. While the officer waited for his cover officer to arrive, he watched the driver fidget in the car. The officer asked the driver if there was anything illegal in the vehicle, and she said no but denied consent to search the vehicle. There were numerous pieces of mail addressed to the driver and a large amount of women’s clothing inside the vehicle. The officer asked the driver and the passenger to exit the vehicle, and the officer found on the driver’s seat a clear glass pipe used for ingesting methamphetamine. He also found a bag containing marijuana and another bag containing a substance believe to be methamphetamine. The officer arrested the driver, a 34-year old Daly City resident, for driving without a license, possession of a controlled substance and for possession of narcotics paraphernalia.

On Thursday, 07-09-15 at 5:57 p.m., officers were dispatched to the St. Francis Square on a report of several subjects drinking and “being loud”. Sergeant Mike Brennan arrived and saw a subject holding a beer can in the rear of the shopping center. As soon as the subject saw the officer, the subject ran away, discarding a plastic baggie containing a white substance. The subject continued to run, and the officer caught up to him. The subject, a 21-year old Daly City resident, was transported to the station and would not provide any information regarding the incident. He was subsequently arrested for resisting arrest.

On Friday, 07-10-15 at 9:00 a.m., officers were dispatched to investigate a report of a traffic collision involving a vehicle that collided with a parked car on the 4300 block of Callan Boulevard. The driver was contacted and was speaking to a firefighter when officers arrived. Officers determined the 20-year old driver from South San Francisco was under the influence of drugs and was found to be in possession of a stimulant. He was cited for the offenses and taken to a sobering facility to be released upon his sobriety

On Friday, 07-10-15 between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., a resident on the unit block of Eastgate Drive was the victim of a robbery and a residential burglary. The 69-year old victim said she was in bed when she heard banging noises and didn’t think anything of it, believing it was the neighbors. She said she then heard several knocks at her bedroom door. Scared that someone was inside her residence, the victim sat in her room and waited for approximately 30 minutes to pass before phoning her nephew. Officers realized the suspect pried a lower floor rear window to gain entry. Once inside the residence, the suspect stole various jewelry and handbags.

On Saturday, 07-11-15 at 12:39 p.m., an officer was flagged down by a woman near Mariposa Avenue and Verano Drive. The woman told the officer she was walking her dogs along the grassy area on the 100 block of Mariposa Avenue when she saw a male subject wearing a white tee-shirt who was masturbating, looking and smiling at her. The woman was offended by this and wanted the subject arrested. The subject, a 29-year old Daly City resident, denied masturbating and said he was urinating. The subject was cited for indecent exposure.

She confronted the subject and told him to give it back to her. She said the subject denied taking it, swore at her and called her names. The subject then fled down the elevator, and the security guard attempted to catch up to him but was unable to do so. The subject was last seen walking on John Daly Boulevard. The investigation is continuing.

On Thursday, 07-09-15 at 6:50 p.m., an employee at the Sally’s Beauty Supply store confronted a subject who had hidden boxes in his sweatpants. The employee asked the subject to remove the boxes and return them to her, and the subject pushed her and ran out of the store, leaving in a black SUV. The subject was described as an African American male, early 20’s, 6’0” tall, medium build, wearing black sweatpants and a black hoodie with the hood over his head. Scams/Other

Warrant Scam

On Wednesday, 07-08-15 at 3:28 p.m., a 62-year old Daly City resident said she received a phone call from a person identifying himself as “Sgt. Gregory Jacob” from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office saying her husband had an outstanding warrant and needed to pay $250 from a PayPal credit card or the husband would be arrested. The victim said the caller had knowledge of actual subpoenas and credible judges. The victim purchased a credit card for the amount and called the unknown suspect. The victim said the next day she called the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office who advised her there were no outstanding cases for her husband.

Please know that no law enforcement agency will call you asking you to make purchases over the phone.

Internal Revenue Service Scam

On Friday, 07-10-15 at 8:48 p.m., a 20-year old Daly City resident was the victim of an “I.R.S. phone scam”. The victim said he received a “missed call” two times and dialed the number. The victim was greeted by a male with an Indian accent, saying he was “Brandon Gabriel” with the Internal Revenue Service. “Mr. Gabriel” told the victim he owed $1,962 and told the victim he would be arrested by the “local police” if he did not provide the money via prepaid card numbers. The victim said the suspect appeared genuinely interested in helping him through the process and did not suspect fraud. The victim complied and withdrew money from his bank and purchased the cards as instructed and gave the information to “Mr. Gabriel”. The victim notified his sister of his predicament, and the sister notified their father who advised this was a scam. Officers tried to call back the phone number, and were unable to do so.

Please spread the word about this so that no one falls victim to this type of scam anymore.

Nextdoor.com

This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
