PRESS RELEASE FOR THE WEEK OF

July 6 - 12, 2015

 

Any charges reported in this press release are merely accusations and the Defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Fire: Officer’s assisted fire personnel after receiving a report of smoke visible and an active alarm in a residential area.

Lost Property: A wallet with an ID and credit cards in it was reportedly lost sometime the day before in the Valdez area. If found, please turn it into the Police Department.

Counterfeit: A local bank reported a counterfeited note turned in with a deposit from a local business. This case is currently under investigation.

Property Theft: A boat trailer was reportedly stolen while parked in an empty snow lot. Shortly after the initial report, the owner called back stating they found the trailer and forgot permission was given to another individual to borrow it temporarily.

Welfare Check: Officers assisted emergency personnel after a welfare check was requested on several juveniles at the Valdez Glacier that she believed were not dressed properly for the conditions, and was concerned they may get injured while climbing down.

Lost Property: A brown leather wallet was reportedly lost a few nights prior in the Valdez area. If found, please turn it into the Police Department.

Suspicious Person: A caller that was visiting Valdez reported an individual was pounding on the door of the cabin he was staying in that he did not know. The suspect was determined to be knocking on the wrong cabin and was pointed in the right direction to the one he had rented.

Found Property: A Motorola cell phone was found on West Klutina Street. Please call the Police Department with descriptors to claim.

Lost Property: A Ziplock bag containing several credit cards, a Drivers License, and cash was reportedly lost the day before in the Valdez area. If found, please turn it into the Police Department.

Found Property: A pair of Bifocal reading glasses was found on Airport Road. Please call the Police Department with descriptors to claim.

Missing Person: A fisherman reported his deckhand left the boat earlier that morning and had not heard from him since. Shortly after the initial report, he called back stating the individual had contacted him, told the captain he was not cut out for this type of work and subsequently quit.

Property Theft: Car keys were reportedly stolen from inside of a vehicle while in the parking lot of a local bar. If you have any information regarding this case, please contact the Police Department.

Camping: An officer contacted an RV camped on the sidewalk for the night, and showed them a better spot to park it.  

Camping: A caller reported a motor home was setting up camp for the night near their residence. Upon officer’s arrival, the motor home had left the area.

Property Theft: A black wallet containing an ID card, ATM card, and several credit cards was reportedly stolen from a residence. This case is currently under investigation.

Welfare Check: A welfare check was requested on a male individual lying in the Park strip. Upon officer’s arrival, they determined he was just working out.

Public Service: ALICE training was provided by officers to the employees of a local business.

Theft: License plates were reportedly stolen off of vehicles from a local facility. This case is currently under investigation.

Reckless Driving: A vehicle traveling at an excessive rate of speed was reported. Officers were unable to locate a vehicle matching the description given.

Animal DOA: The Animal Control Officer removed a dead marmot from the roadway, after a caller reported hitting a small animal with their vehicle.

Property Theft: A Semi Automatic Handgun was reportedly stolen from a boat in the Small Boat Harbor. If you have any information regarding this case, please contact the Police Department.

Animal at Large: A black Chow mix was reportedly loose in a residential area. The Animal Control Officer made contact with the owner of the dog.

Criminal Mischief: The tires of a vehicle were slashed while parked in the driveway of a local residence. Subsequently, an individual entered another vehicle in the same driveway without the owner’s permission. If you have any information regarding this case, please contact the Police Department.

Disturbance: A threat was made to an individual after an altercation between two parties had occurred.

Domestic Disturbance: A third party caller reported an argument occurred earlier between a friend and their significant other. After Officer’s interviewed all parties involved, they chose to separate without further incident.

Neighbor Issues: Reoccurring issues with a neighbor was reported. Officer’s attempted to make contact with the individual but was unsuccessful.

Bar Disturbance: A bartender requested officer’s assistance with an unruly individual who refused to leave the premises.

Arrested: Steven W. Hackworth, DOB 01/07/1963, of Valdez, was arrested on the charge of Driving under the Influence.  His breath-alcohol content registered .173.

Public Service: An officer traveled to Glennallen to provide ALICE training to the employees of a business.

Civil Dispute: An individual requested to speak to an officer regarding a former acquaintance unwilling to return belongings that were being stored in a shared travel trailer.  An officer spoke to both parties, and assisted in the retrieval of the belongings.

Welfare Check: A welfare check was requested on a small child wandering around in the middle of a roadway without parental supervision. Officers located the child, and assisted in reuniting her with her mother who was looking for her nearby.

Agency Assistance: An individual requested to speak to an officer regarding their window getting broken out of their motor home while camping in McCarthy. Officer’s advised them to file a report with the Alaska State Troopers.

Animal Impound: A dog was taken to the Animal Shelter after it was reported to be running at large in a residential area.

Disturbance: Multiple callers reported a vehicle had sped into a wooded area and heard a women yelling for help. Officers contacted both parties involved in a nearby residence and determined a verbal argument had occurred. They were separated without further incident.

Fraud: A caller reported personal checks went missing out of their checkbook earlier that day. This case is currently under investigation.

Traffic Complaint: A dark colored pickup truck was reportedly driving erratically on the highway. Officers made contact with the driver who was determined not to be impaired and issued multiple traffic warnings.

Trespassing: An individual was trespassed from the local library after acting unruly the night before.

Disorderly Conduct: An individual was issued a disorderly conduct warning after a local business requested officer’s assistance with a male that barged into the office and became hostile toward an employee.

Lost Property: An Iphone was reportedly left in a local bar. If found, please turn it into the Police Department.

Injured Animal: A caller reported a bird flew through the window of his moving vehicle, hit the opposite window, and landed in the passengers lap. The Community Safety Officer took the injured bird to the Animal Shelter.

Welfare Check: A welfare check was requested on a female who seemed distraught, wandering around a residence and the roadway. Officer’s contacted the individual who was just waiting for a friend in the area.

Harassment:  A local bar reportedly received multiple prank phone calls from an unknown individual.

Fireworks: A caller reported fireworks were being set off at a nearby playground. Officer’s contacted a group of individuals and issued a warning for the cities’ firework ordinance.

Noise Disturbance: A caller reported loud music coming from a nearby residence. Upon officer’s arrival in the area, the music had been turned down.

Arrested: Jill A. Harvey, DOB 11/04/1973, of Copper Center, was arrested on the charge of Misconduct Involving a Weapon in the Fifth Degree.

Medical Assistance: Officer’s assisted medical personnel with a young female who had fainted.

Information: A concerned caller believed the FBI was monitoring their computer. Upon Officer’s investigation, it was determined a nearby personal WIFI hotspot had been named “FBI Surveillance Van”.

Fireworks: A caller reported finding a possible un-detonated explosive. It was determined by officers to be an old firework.

Traffic Complaint: An individual was reportedly riding their bike in the middle of the roadway and impeding traffic. Officers were unable to locate the individual in the area.

Welfare Check: A welfare check was requested on an elderly individual who was reportedly distraught on the side of the highway. Officer’s made contact with the individual, and provided him transportation back to his RV.

Property Theft: A long board was reportedly stolen from outside of a school building. Shortly after, officer’s located it in the possession of a juvenile. The case is being referred to Juvenile Intake for a count of Theft in the Fourth Degree.

Noise Disturbance: Loud voices and music was reportedly coming from the back yard of a nearby residence. Officers made contact with one of the resident’s who agreed to keep the noise down.

Arrested: Blayne E. Joseph, DOB 02/17/1984, of Valdez, was arrested on the charge of Driving While License Revoked.

Criminal Mischief: A stenciled painting on the side of a public building was reported. This case is currently under investigation.

Animal Information: The Community Safety Officer assisted an individual after reporting her cat was stuck in a tree.

Animal Impound: A Husky was taken to the Animal Shelter after it was reportedly following customers around the parking lot of a local business.

Criminal Mischief: A caller reported that an individual dug holes in a residential roadway in attempt to slow down passing vehicles. Upon officer’s investigation, the individual stated the holes were caused by playing Tug of war with two vehicles and agreed to fill them back in.

Possible Drunk Driver: A caller reported a possibly intoxicated individual got out of their vehicle and threatened them after driving erratically and stopping in the middle of the roadway, then drove off again. Officer’s made contact with the driver of the vehicle who was determined not to be impaired.
