This week we have seen an increase in cases involving thefts from unlocked cars.
The street slang for this type of crime is called “carhopping” and suspects in carhopping incidents target neighborhoods after dark and search for vehicles that are unlocked. When one is found, they enter the vehicle and take anything of value.
This could be loose change, computers, cellphones, firearms, gps units etc. You can “stop the hopper” by removing valuables and locking your car.
We often hear people say “they will just break the window.” We have found that cases involving windows being broken are very rare. Victims of “car hopping” almost always leave the car unlocked.
