Sun Prairie Police Department - Lock It or Lose It campaign

This summer the Sun Prairie Police Department wants to work with you to eliminate crimes of opportunity. The Sun Prairie Police Department encourages residents to lock their vehicles and remove valuables. Opportunistic thieves target unlocked vehicles with items in plain sight to steal valuable items such as GPS units, iPods, and computers. These thieves will often pass through areas very quickly entering unlocked vehicles while passing up secured vehicles because of the risk of apprehension and extra time it takes to force entry. The majority of thefts in the City of Sun Prairie occur to unlocked vehicles or garages. The Sun Prairie Police Department believes that by removing valuables and locking vehicles, together we can drastically reduce these thefts in the city. One second may save you days of inconvenience and money. Also, If you see something, SAY something! Call 9-1-1 immediately if you witness a car burglary or suspect someone is checking out cars for potential theft. Lock It or Lose it!

Tips:

* Don’t leave valuables in an unattended vehicle.

* If that’s not possible, lock the materials in the trunk of the car, or at least place them out of clear view.

* Always lock unattended vehicles.

* Always roll up your vehicle's windows and lock the doors.

* Be suspicious of anyone approaching your vehicle or roaming your neighborhood.

* Keep your garage door closed and locked at night. Many burglaries to garages occur with doors left wide open. An open garage door is an invitation to a thief to take anything in sight.
