Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Wednesday, 06-10-15 at 6:22 a.m., Officer Christian Poteat was dispatched to the 1100 block of Hanover Street on the report of a male subject, possibly under the influence or lost, who was ringing doorbells in the neighborhood. Officer Poteat located the subject immediately noticed his agitated and angry demeanor. The officer asked him to show him his left hand that he was keeping behind his back. The subject was on probation out of Alameda County with a condition for search and seizure. Officers found a switchblade knife in the subject’s waistline. The officer also conducted some tests to determine if the subject was under the influence of a controlled substance, which he determined he was. Officer Poteat said that en route to the police station, the subject could not sit still. At the police station, the officer conducted a search of the subject’s wallet and found a debit card not belonging to him in his possession. The 36-year old Daly City resident was arrested for being under the influence of methamphetamine, possession of a switchblade knife, misappropriation of lost property and for a probation violation.

On Wednesday, 06-10-15 at 9:38 a.m., a security guard at Westlake Shopping Center flagged down Officer Peter Nelson and informed him of an unwanted subject who was exiting the administrative offices of the shopping center. Officer Nelson noted that the subject appeared unkempt and was wearing wet clothing. The subject told the officer that he was homeless without a permanent residence. The dispatcher advised that the subject had a lengthy criminal history for narcotic-related offenses and had been recently released from jail for being under the influence of narcotics and possessing narcotics. The 33-year old subject admitted to possessing syringes, but denied using or being under the influence of narcotics. As the subject was being transported to the jail, the subject slipped his handcuffs from behind his back to the front and began tearing and removing the foam padding from the back rest of the patrol car. The officer told the subject to stop vandalizing the vehicle, and the subject said he didn’t care. A vandalism charge was added to the possession of narcotics paraphernalia charge.

On Wednesday, 06-10-15 at 7:44 p.m., three officers were dispatched to a residence on the unit block of Mateo Avenue on a report of two males having a loud argument and one male threatening to choke the other. As officers arrived, they heard a loud scream and observed a subject fall down the stairwell and stopped at the landing. The subject had a knife in each hand. The argument was over a family matter, and the 71-year old subject was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, as well as elder abuse after his 65-year old sister was injured during the incident.

On Wednesday, 06-10-15 at 10:48 p.m., a 28-year old Daly City resident said he got off the bus in the area of Geneva Avenue and Castillo Street and was followed by three subjects who also got off the bus. The victim said he was tackled from behind by subject and fell to the ground. His Louis Vuitton duffel bag containing numerous electronic items was taken. The victim was able to provide an identification of the subjects, and all three were found in the vicinity. The subjects, a 19 year old and two 22 year olds from Hayward, were all arrested for robbery and conspiracy. Most of the victim’s property was returned to him.

On Friday, 06-12-15 at 3:58 p.m., Officer Karen Douglas contacted a pedestrian who had a bicycle and was stopped near the First National Bank on Mission Street. The subject told the officer he was trying to find a light for his cigarette. Officer Douglas smelled an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the subject, and she noticed the subject appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance. The officer asked the subject if he had anything illegal on him, and he said he didn’t. Officer Douglas reached into the subject’s coin pocket of his shorts and pulled out a small folded up piece of paper. The officer handed the paper to her cover officer. As she did that, she said the suspect broke his hands free from her grasp and took off running through bushes and onto Santa Barbara Avenue. Both officers were able to catch up to the subject. The subject, a 43-year old South San Francisco resident, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, being under the influence of a controlled substance and alcohol, and for misappropriation of lost property (the bicycle).

On Saturday, 06-13-15 at 1:20 a.m., DCPD officers and officers from surrounding agencies were called to assist with clearing an unauthorized gathering estimated at 300+ people at the Thornton Beach area. As officers were clearing the beach, one subject refused to comply with the officer’s commands to leave the area. The subject, a 23-year old San Francisco resident, challenged the officer to fight. He was arrested for resisting/obstructing an officer and for an outstanding warrant. The officer was unharmed.

Robberies

There were two robberies during the past week. In both cases, arrests were made.

On Wednesday, 06-10-15 at 11:00 a.m., a 41-year old Daly City resident was the victim of a strong armed robbery and criminal threats by her 16-year old daughter. This occurred on the 1000 block of Hanover Street. The victim said her daughter, a runaway from a foster home in San Jose, knocked on her door on her door and asked her if she could take a shower. The victim said she allowed her daughter to do so, and then her daughter asked to use her cell phone. The victim said she declined her request as she has stolen her phone in the past. The victim said she dialed the number and put the phone on speaker-mode. The victim said at that point, her daughter forcefully snatched the phone out of her hand and a struggle ensued, causing scratches to the victim’s arm. The suspect fled the house. Officers found the daughter two days later and transported her to the Youth Services Division. The victim was unharmed.

In partnership with Starbucks, the Town of Colma, the Daly City Partnership and the Daly City Police and Fire Departments, the City of Daly City is collecting school supplies and backpacks for school-age children. Backpacks and school supplies can be donated and dropped off at any Daly City or Colma fire station, police department or Starbucks. Monetary donations are also accepted online at www.dcpartnership.org , or by making a check donation payable to Daly City Partnership.

If you know of a child who may need assistance with school supplies, the child’s family may sign up at the Daly City Community Service Center located at 350-90th Street, Daly City. Enrollment guidelines are proof of income and residency (some South San Francisco and Brisbane families may apply if their children are enrolled in a Daly City school).

Nextdoor.com

This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
