Police Arrest Man who Rams Police Vehicle During Pursuit

Chula Vista Police arrested 60 year old Carlos Juan Vasquez after a nearly 30 minute pursuit through surface streets in the south part of Chula Vista. Vasquez has an extensive violent criminal history and is believed have been under the influence of methamphetamines during today’s incident.
Just after Noon today, Chula Vista Police began receiving several calls from citizens about a male driving erratically in a blue compact car. Officers checked the area but did not immediately locate the vehicle. At about 1:48 hours, about an 1 ½ hours after the first call, a Chula Vista Police Officer spotted the vehicle driving in the 100 block of E. Oneida. He attempted to make a traffic stop but the driver immediately failed to yield. Officers initiated a pursuit which ended 27 minutes later in the suspect’s own driveway in the 1300 block of Max Ave.
During the pursuit police deployed spike strips on two occasions. On the second deployment the strips deflated two of the suspect’s tires but the pursuit continued. At one point the suspect drove down a cul-de-sac, turned his car around, stopped, and then accelerated intentionally into the front of a police vehicle. The vehicle was damaged but not disabled and the Sergeant driving was not injured. The suspect then drove over and damaged an electrical box as he exited the cul-de-sac and continued to flee pursuing officers. The San Diego Sheriff’s Department’s Air Unit, ASTREA, joined the pursuit after about 15 minutes. The suspect drove in circles, running through stop signs and traffic signals, going through parking lots and through grass parks. He struck and injured a citizen who was in their vehicle stopped at a light at 3rd and Orange Ave. That person was taken to the hospital for evaluation for injuries, and released a short time later.
The pursuit finally ended when the suspect pulled into his own driveway and fled on foot from his vehicle toward the back of the house on Max. A K-9 was deployed and brought the suspect to the ground as he was climbing the fence. Officers attempted to handcuff Vasquez but he continued to resist. The officers used the Taser to gain compliance and were able to take him into custody without further injury. He was transported to the hospital for injuries suffered during the K-9 deployment.
After release from the hospital Vasquez will be booked on charges including felony assault on an officer, multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and felony evasion.
