Two Oklahoma residents were rescued from the Mojave Riverbed after being stuck in soft dirt

DATE/TIME: June 7, 2015, at approximately 10:20 a.m.

INCIDENT: Search & Rescue

LOCATION: Calico Lakes, Yermo

SUSPECT(S):

VICTIM(S): Cody Raynor, age 24, a resident of Oklahoma
Adeila Walters, age 27, a resident of Oklahoma

SUMMARY: On June 7, 2015, at about 10:20 a.m., deputies from the Barstow Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of a man who had walked out of the desert near the Calico Lakes community in Yermo. Citizens of the community reported the man appeared confused, distraught and hallucinating. Deputies and medical personnel contacted the man and identified him as Cody Raynor from Oklahoma. Raynor was treated by medical personnel and transported to Barstow Community Hospital for severe dehydration. While being treated, he stated he and his girlfriend, Adeila Walters, were travelling and became stuck in soft dirt in the Mojave Riverbed.

Believing a second person may need help, deputies immediately launched an air and ground search for Walters. Deputies soon located Raynor’s vehicle, stuck in soft dirt near Minneola Road and Coventry Road. A citizen with an off highway vehicle assisted deputies by driving them to the vehicle. There, deputies did not find Walters, but located shoe prints in the sand that lead away from the vehicle. Barstow Sheriff’s Station Search and Rescue personnel were summoned and they began to track the female towards the town of Yermo.

At about 7:50 p.m., search and rescue tracked the female into the town of Yermo, where they suspended the search due to the reasonableness Walter’s could have found help in the town and it was getting dark.

At about 10:00 p.m., Sheriff’s dispatch received information from the California Highway Patrol, Walters had been located on the freeway and taken for medical help.

The Sheriff’s Department would like to remind the public not to venture off paved road and stay on well travelled roadways when not familiar with the area. As summer approaches, temperatures can reach well over 100 degrees during the day and quickly incapacitate you without water and proper supplies.
