Notable Cases

On Monday, 05-25-15 at 9:30 p.m., Officer Sean Begley was patrolling in the area of Mission Street and East Market Street when he heard a loud yell coming from the corner near the bank. The subject continued yelling at the officer, turned his back to him, pulled his jeans down and exposed himself to the officer and several cars that were passing by at the time. The subject, a 41-year old transient, said that he was “tweaking out” and admitted to using methamphetamine earlier in the day. The subject was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance and for indecent exposure.

On Tuesday, 05-26-15 at 3:30 p.m., Officer Sean Begley and Officer Brandon Scholes were on patrol and were advised by the San Mateo County Vehicle Theft Task Force to be on the lookout for a specific stolen rental vehicle that was to believe to frequent Daly City. The officers saw the vehicle driving in the Serramonte Shopping Center parking lot and conducted a “felony vehicle stop” and ordered the two occupants out of the vehicle. The driver, a 30-year old San Francisco resident, denied any knowledge of the vehicle being stolen. She was arrested, and the passenger, a 30-year old San Francisco resident, was released.

On Tuesday, 05-26-15 at 10:04 p.m., officers were dispatched to the unit block of School Street on a report of a physical domestic altercation involving a cell phone being stolen. The 33-year old victim said she was at her former boyfriend’s residence and advised him she would not be paying back a loan. She left the residence, and she said her former friend attacked her and took her cell phone. The victim’s left eye was swollen closed. The victim was able to use the “Find my iPhone” app to locate her phone. After an investigation, officers arrested the female friend, a 29-year old San Mateo resident for robbery, criminal conspiracy and battery creating serious bodily injury. The former boyfriend, a 25-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for robbery, criminal conspiracy and for resisting arrest.
On Wednesday, 05-27-15 at 7:25 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Rio Verde Street on a report of an auto burglary in progress. The reporting party saw an unknown female inside of her mother’s vehicle. The suspect, a 49-year old San Francisco resident, was detained and arrested for auto burglary. While at the jail, officers noticed a glass pipe fall from the suspect. An additional charge of possession of narcotics paraphernalia was added to the booking charge.

On Wednesday, 05-27-15 at 8:48 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Serramonte Shopping Center near the Target parking lot on a report of a burglary to an auto. The property taken was a laptop, Kindle fire and miscellaneous clothing. Target security was able to use the video surveillance system to capture the suspects committing the burglary. The following day at 3:32 p.m., a Target loss prevention officer called and advised out dispatch that both subjects seen the day before were back in the store. Officers then arrested both subjects—a 29-year old San Francisco resident and a 34-year old San Francisco resident, for vehicle burglary, conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of burglary tools, receiving known stolen property, identity theft and possession of controlled substances paraphernalia. An additional charge of providing a false name was added to the female’s arrest record—as she gave a false name to the officer. (The deputy at the jail recognized her from a previous incident.)

On Thursday, 05-28-15 at 12:45 a.m., Officer Keith Mattos stopped a vehicle at the intersection of John Daly Boulevard and Delong Street for an investigation of a subject driving under the influence. During the investigation, the subject fled the scene and a brief pursuit was initiated and immediately canceled due to road conditions. A short while later, the vehicle was located at the intersection of San Jose Avenue and Geneva Avenue after the driver was involved in a non-injury hit and run collision. The driver attempted to flee again and intentionally backed into a Daly City police vehicle. The subject abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot. Officers were able to detain the subject, a 45-year old San Francisco resident, and they arrested him for driving under the influence, vandalism, evading a peace officer, hit and run, and obstructing/resisting a peace officer.

On Thursday, 05-28-15 at 12:33 p.m., officers were dispatched to the unit block of Belford Drive on a report of two suspicious males unknown to the reporting party that walked to the rear of his neighbor’s home. The reporting party looked out the window and knew the neighbor had already left and thought that these subjects were possibly involved in a burglary. The reporting party’s hunch was correct: the two subjects had burglarized the residence and were caught nearby by officers. The subjects, an 18-year old from Concord and a 21-year old from San Francisco, were both arrested for burglary, receiving stolen property, possessing burglary tools and conspiracy.

The typical method burglarizing a vehicle is by smashing a window, and thieves are easily able to open the trunk from inside of the vehicle.

Scams/Other

“Grandchild was arrested and needs help”

On Tuesday, 05-26-15 at 8:30 a.m., a 76-year old Daly City resident received a phone call from a subject who called him “grandfather” who stated she was okay, but she had been arrested for a “D.U.I.” and damaged another vehicle. The phone went silent for several seconds, and the resident said a male subject who said his name was “Paul Fenner” got on the phone said the granddaughter had been arrested for a “D.U.I.” in Orange County, and he was her public defender. He instructed the resident to go to the Money gram store in Pacifica, purchase a Money gram card for $1,500 and then to re-contact him. The resident said he acted “confused” and told the caller he’d call him back. The money was NOT transferred because the caller notified us first. Please just know this scam is going around—especially now that summer break is starting and many college-age kids may be traveling.

Nextdoor.com

This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
