OSBI Investigates Shooting of Oologah Officer

Thursday evening, the Nowata County Sheriff’s Office requested OSBI investigative and crime scene assistance with a case involving the shooting of an Oologah police officer. Minutes earlier, a Talala police officer made a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle. When the officer determined he would arrest the three occupants of the vehicle, he called for backup. A nearby Oologah officer assisted. When the two officers requested the driver exit the vehicle, the man drove off. Both officers returned to their patrol cars and pursued the suspect vehicle. Approximately four miles from the traffic stop, occupants inside the suspect vehicle began shooting at the officers. The Oologah officer was hit by a bullet and crashed his vehicle just north of County Road 90 at State Highway 169, northbound. That officer was transported by medical helicopter to a Tulsa hospital where he is recovering from non-life threatening wounds. The pursuit of the vehicle continued into Kansas where it eventually ended. Two of the three people inside the vehicle ran into a nearby wooded area. They were quickly apprehended by officers and placed in the Montgomery County, KS, jail. The third suspect carjacked an elderly man and shot him. The victim is expected to recover from his injuries. Several hours later, that third suspect was arrested by Kansas authorities. OSBI is only investigating the shooting of the Oologah officer. Names of those arrested will be released when OSBI obtains the booking information from Kansas. Please contact the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for information on the other aspects of this case.
