"Distraction Burglary" in Carson W/ Tips on How to Prevent Them

On Tuesday, May 26, 2015, a family living in a house on 182nd street in Carson was contacted by a Hispanic couple. This couple told the residents they were interested in purchasing an adjacent house, but wanted to inspect the connecting fence for damage, prior to making the purchase. Not suspecting any foul play, the residents escorted the couple to the backyard. While in their backyard, two additional Hispanic males snuck into the house without their knowledge. One of the residents became suspicious of the situation so he reentered their house and saw the two suspects inside. Believing these men committed a crime, he gave chase but all the suspects managed to escape. Unfortunately, these suspects were able to steal precious jewelry and other personal property.

The vehicle used by these suspects was described as a dark gray 4-door sedan. The car had paper license plates with the word “STAR”.

If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact Carson Sheriff Station and ask for Detective Sather at (310) 830-1123.

This incident, which we're calling a "distraction burglary", is where suspects will use a diversion to get people away from their home. While the victim is away from their home, it allows other suspects to break in and take valuables without being seen. In this case, they were caught red-handed, but most aren't until it's too late. These types of incidents are becoming more prevalent, but by taking a few precautionary measures, you can help us in making this a thing of the past.
