Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Wednesday, 05-13-15 at 9:37 a.m., Officer Phillip Wagnon was dispatched to an apartment on the 700 block of Green Ridge Drive on a report of a subject who had just used cocaine and was hallucinating. Officer Wagnon was met by the subject’s sister who said her brother was running through the house saying he was on fire, yet he was soaking wet from the shower. She said she went into the bathroom and found a used syringe on the floor. Officer Wagnon asked the subject, a 28-year old Daly City resident, if he was okay, and the subject told the officer his hands were on fire, and he had just shot up cocaine. Knowing that the suspect lived in the house with a three year old, the officer asked the subject if there were any more needles or drugs in the house. The suspect advised the officer he had more cocaine in a lunch pail inside the living room closet. The officer found the lunch pail, and within that, he found a small pouch containing three baggies of suspected cocaine and two small chunks of heroin wrapped in a clear cellophane material. The subject told the officer he was planning on going to rehab, so he decided to use one last time. Officer Wagnon issued a citation to the subject for possession of a controlled substance and for being under the influence of a controlled substance and transported him to “First Chance”.

On Thursday, 05-14-15 at 5:25 p.m., officers from the Crime Suppression Unit conducted a probation search at a residence on the 500 block of Verducci Drive. The 33-year old male resident was currently on probation for possession of a controlled substance in San Mateo County with had a search and seizure clause. The officers found the suspect was in possession of over 11 grams of methamphetamine for sales, two glass pipes, a digital scale, and approximately 110 new empty plastic bags. The subject was arrested for possession of a controlled substance for sale, possession of a dangerous drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and keeping a place to sell controlled substances.

On Thursday, 05-14-15 at 6:45 p.m., officers from the Crime Suppression Unit conducted another probation search at a residence coincidentally next door to the previous probation search they conducted on the 500 block of Verducci Drive. The resident was on search and seizure probation for a firearms violation. The 44-year old resident had a very large and aggressive dog. Officers asked the subject to put the dog into a bathroom, and the subject tried for several minutes to convince the officers to allow the dog to be put in the garage. Finally the subject put his dog on the deck. On a work bench in the garage, officers found a small plastic bag containing a crystalline substance—suspected methamphetamine. Officers found a tackle box with a padlock on it, and the subject said the bag belonged to his deceased father and that the officers should respect the dead and not look in the box. One officer was able to lift a corner of the box open enough to see inside and saw small bags containing a crystalline substance all packaged for sale. The subject was arrested for being in possession of a controlled substance for sale.

On Sunday, 05-17-15 at 8:12 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Trader Joe’s store on a report of a transient subject refusing to leave after being asked by Westlake Security to do so. Officers, along with the security officers, detained the subject and determined he was under the influence of a controlled substance. The 28-year old transient was booked into jail.

On Sunday, 05-17-15 at 9:29 a.m., officers were dispatched to Mussel Rock Park on a report of a paraglider who crashed into the side of a hill. The Fire Department and Cliff Rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene. The 51-year old paraglider from San Bruno suffered fatal injuries.

Scams/Other

Pigeon Drop Scam

This did not occur in Daly City—but in our neighboring city, South San Francisco. On Friday, 05-15-15 at 11:00 a.m., a South San Francisco resident was approached by someone while walking on the 200 block of South Spruce Avenue who offered to sell her a “diamond”. During their conversation, a second subject drove up next to them and offered to buy the diamond for $7,000. The seller turned down the subject because he had already offered the diamond to the victim. Believing the diamond was real, the victim gave the subject $700.00 in cash and $1,500.00 worth of her own jewelry for the diamond. The victim later discovered that the diamond was not real. The first suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 18-21 years old, light complexion, short black hair, brown eyes, 5’3”, with a stock build wearing a plaid shirt and blue jeans. The second subject is described as a Hispanic male, approximately 30 years old, dark complexion, black straight hair, brown eyes, goatee, approximately 5’6”, with a thin build and wearing a black long sleeved shirt. He was driving a black 4-door sedan.

Nextdoor.com

This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
