Teen Arrested in Assault on Cyclist

School Resource Officers, patrol officers, and detectives from the Anchorage Police Department have arrested a 15 year old male today after he assaulted a bicyclist on the Chester Creek Trail yesterday morning.

Following up on a detailed description provided by the victim, East High School Resource Officers worked with ASD staff and were able to identify the three males involved in yesterday’s assault.  Following interviews with the suspects, and based on video evidence, police learned that a 15-year-old and his 16-year-old brother had skipped school with a friend yesterday.  While walking along the Chester Creek Bike Trail westbound, they came upon an eastbound cyclist.  The 15-year-old, using a large branch as a walking stick, swung the stick at the cyclist as he passed, striking him in the face with it.  During the interview process, the suspects told officers what they were wearing the day of the assault, which matched victim and witness accounts.

The 15-year-old has been referred for assault charges and admitted to McLaughlin Youth Center.  At this time, there are no charges against the other two males.  This case will be reviewed by the Division of Juvenile Justice for further action.

The victim was admitted to a local hospital for treatment of facial fractures and skull fractures and is expected to undergo surgical procedures in the near future.
