Man Assaulted on Trail While Biking to Work

An Anchorage man is hospitalized today following an early morning attack on an East Anchorage bike trail.

The 43-year-old victim told police he was biking to work at about 8:45 AM, traveling eastbound on the Chester Creek bike trail about 80 yards west of the Goose Lake overpass, when he came upon three young black males who were walking on the bike trail.  One of the males was carrying a tree branch approximately 5’ long and about 2 1/2” diameter, which he was using as a walking stick.  As the cyclist passed, the male swung the branch directly into the victims face.  The victim lost control of his bike and crashed.  The three then walked away from the scene and disappeared into the neighborhood near East High School.

The victim sustained a broken nose, a fractured right orbital bone and a skull fracture.  The victim has been admitted to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries and overnight observation.

The males were described as three black males all with medium skin tone complexion. The assailant is described as approximately 15 years of age, medium build with short hair.  His acquaintance is described as a 17 or 18 year old, approximately 6’ tall with short hair on the side and curly on top.  No description is available of the third male.
