Mercury spill contained, cleanup underway. Partial traffic opening.

Text Body: Members of the Ventura County Fire Department and assisting emergency agencies have confirmed that an unspecified amount of mercury has been spilled on the north side of Cochran St in the 4100 block in Simi Valley. The containment has been isolated to six residential homes.

The Simi Valley Police Department is in the begining stages of re-opening Cochran St between Tapo Canyon and Tapo St. Eastbound traffic will be opened for residents to return to homes outside the containment area. Due to ongoing cleanup efforts, motorists are advised to avoid the area on Tuesday, May 12, until further notice.

Schools can be reopened tomorrow as no health threats were determined in the immediate area.

California Environment Protection Agency (CALEPA) and California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) are currently en route to the site to begin cleanup of the area.

The American Red Cross is on scene providing assitance to six displaced community members and three Ventura County Firefighters.
