Identity of Moped Driver; Fatal Collision Remains Under Investigation

Update on Monday, May 11, 2015:

The driver of a moped on the Glenn Highway who died after colliding with an SUV has been identified as 66-year-old Leroy Blix Jr.

A preliminary investigation of the collision revealed that a moped being driven by Blix Jr. was traveling outbound on the Glenn Highway in the far right lane. A red SUV, also traveling in the far right lane, collided with the moped just before the S Curves (between Fort Richardson and the scales). The driver of the SUV remained on scene and was cooperative with police during the initial investigation. No charges have been filed at this time as the fatal collision remains under investigation by traffic investigators with APD’s Traffic Unit.

APD would like to thank the several citizens who pulled over and attempted to provide medical aid to the driver of the moped as first responders were en route. 

Original Release Sent on Saturday Evening: 

Anchorage Police are currently investigating a fatal car crash that occurred on the Glenn Highway just before 6:30 this evening.  The crash happened on the outbound lanes, approximately one quarter mile past the Fort Rich overpass.  The crash was between a vehicle and a moped in which the driver of the moped was killed.

The far left lane of the highway remains open.  Anchorage Police are asking drivers to merge to the left and be cognizant of first responders and emergency vehicles.  The processing of the scene is expected to take several hours.
