Details:
On 05/04/2015 at about 1500 hours Gilroy Police and Fire units were dispatched to a residence on the 500 block of El Cerrito Way on a report of a teenage female suffering from a single gunshot wound to the leg.
Upon arriving, officers determined the residence was that of a Gilroy Police Officer. Responding officers found the victim suffering from a non-life threatening, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg. Emergency medical personnel provided first aid and prepped the victim for transport. The victim was transported via ground ambulance to a local trauma center where she is undergoing treatment for her injuries and is listed in stable condition.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim gained access to a firearm belonging to the officer and accidently discharged the weapon into her leg.
This investigation is being handled by the Gilroy Police Department’s Investigation Unit. Once completed, the investigation will be forwarded to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office for review.
There are no outstanding persons involved in this case and there are no outstanding public safety concerns.
