Distracted Driver Operation Yields 108 Motorists Cited for Cell Phone Use

Chula Vista - Officers from the Chula Vista Police Department conducted a Distracted Driver Operation on Monday April 13, 2015 between the hours of 3 PM and 10 PM within the City of Chula Vista.

Distracted driver operations concentrate on drivers talking on their cell phones or texting while operating a motor vehicle.

During this operation, traffic stops were conducted on 179 vehicles. 64 drivers were cited for utilizing their cell phone while driving and 44 drivers were cited for texting. 3 drivers were cited for either having a suspended driver’s license or no license at all. 1 vehicle was impounded during the operation for the driver not possessing a valid license. 33 other citations were written for various vehicle code violations including: unsafe speed, violation of signals, driving on the wrong side of the road, window tint and driving with headphones in both ears. 1 person was arrested for reckless driving and 1 person was arrested for possession of heroin.

This was the second of five operations in April focused on Distracted Driving and it was considered a successful operation. The Chula Vista Police Department is continuing its efforts to keep our community safe by encouraging drivers to follow the rules of the road.
