Chula Vista Suspect Found Hiding In A Hotel
On 4-7-15, at about 5:00pm, residents in the 300 block of G Street called Chula Vista Police Dispatch to report a suspicious man trying to get into numerous apartments. One resident was involved in a physical fight with the suspect and the suspect pulled a knife. During the struggle, the suspect may have tried to rob the victim of his wallet. Chula Vista Police officers responded to the area and learned the suspect may have run into the El Primero Hotel located at 416 Third Avenue. Current residents of the hotel and the hotel manager ran outside as the man with the knife entered the lobby. The manager of the hotel told CVPD officers the suspect was the only person in the business. Officers set up a perimeter and believed the suspect to be inside the hotel.
At about 8:00pm, the Chula Vista Police Department SWAT and Crisis Negotiations Team were activated to assist in getting cooperation from the suspect. CVPD SWAT entered the business and established contact with the suspect at about 9:30pm. The suspect refused to cooperate and the negotiations lasted up to 10:25pm. The suspect eventually dove out of a glass window and attempted to run through the courtyard of the hotel. CVPD SWAT officers deployed bean bag rounds and a Taser on the suspect with little to no effect. The suspect eventually ran through a glass and rod iron gate leading to the street. A CVPD Canine unit was deployed and the suspect was taken to the ground by the Police Canine. The suspect was handcuffed and arrested.
Medics were already on scene and called to treat the suspect for numerous injuries sustained during the incident. The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment and later identified as 26 year old Garry Romero. The Chula Vista Police Department Crimes of Violence Unit is investigating the incident. Romero will be charged with numerous felonies when he is cleared for incarceration.
