(HOUSTON, TX)- A Friday night street racing initiative by Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies resulted in the arrest of eight individuals; additionally, 13 traffic citations were
issued for various other violations.

The initiative was held on Friday, March 20, the same weekend as one of the biggest drag racing events in the country- TX2K. This year the event took place in Baytown and drew thousands of spectators, many of which insist on using the streets of Harris County to do racing of their own.

Charged and arrested were:

Martin Vela Racing on a Highway
Demitrius Abercrombie Racing on a Highway
Eduardo Cerazo Racing on a Highway
Marquise Christian Driving While Intoxicated

Street racing is a class B misdemeanor, with maximum punishment of a $2,000 fine, 180 days in jail and driver’s license suspension.

Repeat offenders can be charged with a second degree felony, which could result in up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

In street racing, passengers can be punished as severely as the driver. Spectators can also be fined.

The crime also becomes a felony if the street racing results in serious bodily injury or death.
