Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

Notable Cases

On Monday, 03-16-15 at 11:15 p.m., Officer Kenneth Kim stopped a vehicle for a registration violation at Bayshore Boulevard and Geneva Avenue. The officer smelled an odor of marijuana from the vehicle and observed a green leafy substance was on the lap of the passenger. The officer asked the driver and two occupants to step out of the vehicle and asked the driver if he could search the vehicle. The driver consented and said there was nothing illegal inside his vehicle. Officer Joshua Moala arrived to assist in the search and found a handgun in the front passenger seat compartment. Officers arrested the passenger, a 25-year old Sacramento resident, for being a felon in possession of a concealed loaded firearm, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person and having a concealed firearm in a vehicle. The other subjects were released.

On Wednesday, 03-18-15 at 10:01 p.m., Officer Benjamin Riney and Officer Nick Ottoboni were on patrol in the area of Niantic Street and Westlake Avenue and observed a female subject walking by herself, shouting profanities loudly and swinging her arms in a violent punching motion. The officers stopped her and determined she was under the influence of drugs. They cited the subject, a 34-year old Daly City resident, and took her to a sobering station.

On Friday, 03-20-15 at 12:51 p.m., Officer Ryan Hyink and Officer Ira Perez were dispatched to Westmoor High School on a report of an unwanted subject who possibly under the influence and was on school grounds. Officers stopped the subject nearby, and the campus security officer met the officers and identified the subject. The security officer said he asked the subject to leave, and the subject took a swing at him but did not make contact. During a consent search, officers found paraphernalia used to consume controlled substances in his possession. The subject, a 46-year old transient, was taken to Peninsula Hospital. A complaint will be sought for assault on a school employee and for possession of narcotics paraphernalia.

On Sunday, 03-22-15 at 8:51 p.m., Officer Jaime Bermudez was on patrol in the area of Hillcrest Drive and Mission Circle when he was dispatched to a report of a brandishing by a subject that occurred about a block away. Officer Bermudez was circulating the area when he saw a subject walking by who took a sip from his coffee cup, raising his sweatshirt in the process, which exposed a black handle of a knife in his waistband. Officer Bermudez stopped the subject and removed a 12-inch kitchen knife which was not in a sheath from the subject’s waistband. The subject, an 18-year old Daly City resident, said he was carrying the knife for his protection. He was arrested for carrying a concealed dirk/dagger.


Robberies

There were two robberies during the past week.

On Wednesday, 03-18-15 at 9:26 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Century Theaters on a report of a man armed with a handgun. The report told the officers he was standing in front of the theater and heard someone yelling from above the fountain area. He said he looked up and saw a male subject holding out his arm with a shiny object in his hand. The subject was described as a Filipino male, 20-30 years old, 5’8” with a heavy build. Police looked around the area and could not find a suspect or a victim. Detectives are assigned to this case and are reviewing video surveillance.

On Thursday, 03-19-15 at 2:12 a.m., a 23-year old Daly City resident was the victim of a robbery via knife, punches and kicks by three unidentified suspects as he was walking on Elmwood Drive and South Mayfair Avenue. The loss was an iPhone 5S, a wallet containing various cards, identification and a set of keys. The suspects were last seen fleeing westbound on South Mayfair Avenue in a dark colored 4-door vehicle. The first suspect is described as a black male, approximately 18 years old, light skinned, 5’10”, thin build, wearing all black. The second suspect is described as a Hispanic male 16-17 years old, light skinned and wearing all black. The third suspect is also described as a Hispanic male, 18-years old, light skinned, wearing all black. The victim sustained minor lacerations but refused medical attention.


Residential Burglaries

There was one residential burglary and one attempted residential burglary during the past week.

Between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on 03-18-15, a few garage storage closets to the apartments on the 400 block of 89th Street were burglarized. An unknown suspect pried open the closets. There was no loss.

Between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on 03-17-15, an unknown subject attempted to pry the front door of a residence on the 300 block of 89th Street. There was no entry made.


Commercial Burglaries


There were two commercial burglaries and two attempted commercial burglaries during the past week.


On Wednesday, 03-18-15 at 2:55 a.m., the Kukje Supermarket was burglarized by an unknown suspect who entered the business by breaking a ceiling panel. The investigation is continuing.

Between Saturday, 03-21-15 at 6:00 p.m. and Monday, 03-23-15 at midnight, the Hilltop Beauty School was burglarized by an unknown subject who made entry through the front door by an unknown means. The loss is currently unknown.

On Wednesday, 03-18-15 at approximately 12:15 a.m., the Dunn Edwards Paint Store was the victim of attempted burglary via a smash to the front door window by an unknown suspect. There was no loss to the store.

On Saturday, 03-21-15 between 6:00 p.m. and midnight, an unknown subject attempted to saw the pad lock off a storage unit at the Public Storage facility on Mission Street. No entry was made.



Vehicle Burglaries

There were ten vehicle burglaries during the past week.

• Unit block of Vendome Street—a wallet containing credit cards was taken from underneath the back of the center console of a 2007 Toyota Sienna. The rear door was pried. Occurred on 03-16-15 from 1:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• 2600 block of Bayshore Boulevard—a backpack containing a MacBook and two external hard drives was taken from a 2004 Ford pickup. The left rear window was smashed. Occurred on 03-18-15 between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
• 300 block of Otillia Street—miscellaneous change was taken from the coin tray of a 2001 Toyota Camry. The front passenger window was smashed. Occurred between 10:30 p.m. on 03-18-15 and 10:00 a.m. on 03-19-15.
• Schwerin Street/Bay Ridge Drive—a backpack containing textbooks was taken from a 1999 Toyota Corolla. The rear passenger window was smashed. Occurred between 8:00 p.m. on 03-18-15 and 9:00 a.m. on 03-19-15.
• In N Out Burger—a backpack containing a MacBook laptop was taken from a 2010 Toyota Corolla. The left rear window was smashed. Occurred on 03-19-15 between 8:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
• 2400 block of Lupine Court—a house key was taken from a 2003 Mazda 6. Entry was made via a unknown means. Occurred between 8:45 pm. on 03-19-15 and 8:45 a.m. on 03-20-15.
• Lake Merced Gold & Country Club—a backpack containing a laptop, iPad, and a digital camera was taken from a 2015 Nissan Pathfinder. The left rear passenger window was smashed. Occurred on 03-20-15 between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
• South Hill Boulevard/Cloister Way—a gym bag containing sunglasses, watch and a jacket was taken from the front seat of a 2009 Toyota Yaris. Entry was made via an unknown means. Occurred on 03-22-15 between 2:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.
• 200 block of Alta Vista Way—unknown what was taken from a 2006 Toyota Highlander. Entry was made via an unknown means. Occurred on 03-22-15 between midnight and 10:30 a.m.
• 2000 block of Pine Court—blankets, jackets, sunglasses and a garage door opener was taken from a 2011 Toyota Sienna. The method of entry is unknown. Occurred on 03-20-15 between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. ** On-line report.

Stolen Vehicles

There were four vehicles stolen during the past week. Three were recovered.

• Hillside Boulevard/Garwood Court—a 1994 Honda Civic. Occurred between 9:40 p.m. on 03-16-15 and 6:45 a.m. on 03-17-15. **Recovered by Daly City P.D. on 03-17-15.
• Home Depot parking lot—a 2009 Ford E150 van. Occurred on 03-17-15 between 6:45 p.m. and 7:10 p.m. **Recovered by the Golden Gate National Recreation Police on 03-19-15.
• 600 block of Southgate Avenue—a 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer. Occurred between 7:00 p.m. on 03-17-15 and 6:15 a.m. on 03-18-15.
• 200 block of Lake Merced Boulevard—a 2014 BMW I3. Occurred between 8:00 a.m. on 03-21-15 and 11:55 a.m. on 03-22-15. **Recovered by Daly City P.D. on 03-24-15.

Eyeglass Collection

Do you have any old eyeglasses you no longer need? The Daly City Host Lions Club is collecting eyeglasses on Saturday, March 28 between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. near the food court at the Serramonte Shopping Center. These eyeglasses will be donated and shipped around the world for the “gift of sight” for those who cannot afford eyeglasses.

If you cannot make it on that date, the Daly City Host Lions Club has alternative collection locations in Daly City. Spring Fun Day

The Department of Library and Recreation Services and the Daly City Host Lions Club is having their annual free Spring Fun Day Egg Hunt and Field Day on Saturday, April 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Policita Gym and Field at 550 East Market Street. The hunt times are broken down by age groups: 12:00 pm—Pre-K, 12:30pm—Kinderkids, Grades 1 &2, 12:45 pm—Grades 3 & 4. This event is held rain or shine. In the event of poor weather, all activities will be moved inside the gym facility. Goodie bags will be given out at the end of the egg hunt. For more information, please call (650) 991-8001.


Free Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA Spay/Neuter Clinic

On the 4th Wednesday of every month through June, the Peninsula Humane Society and the SPCA is holding a free spay/neuter clinic at Pet Food Express at 6295 Mission Street. No dogs over 80 pounds, and no pets over 8 years old. This free service is valued at $400+ at a private vet hospital. The dates are: March 25, April 22, May 27 and June 24, and the time is 8:00-9:00 a.m.—first come, served. For questions, call (650) 340-7022, ext. 387.


Daly City Host Lions Club Pasta Bingo

The Daly City Host Lion’s Club is having their annual Pasta Bingo event on Friday, April 17, 2015 from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM at the Doelger Café in Westlake Park. (101 Lake Merced Boulevard, Daly City). The cost is $20.00 per person (before April 13) and $25.00 per person after April 13. The cost includes dinner and ten bingo games with six cards per game. The prizes are donated, and there is no cash prize. Dinner is pasta, salad, bread, dessert and coffee. 13th Annual Family Literacy and Health Day

The Jefferson Elementary School District, along with the Daly City Partnership, PTA and PIAC, is holding their 13th annual Family Literacy and Healthy Day at the Susan B. Anthony School at 575 Abbot Avenue (near Hillside Boulevard) in Daly City on Saturday, April 11, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This year’s theme is “Readers are Superheroes”, and this free event includes books, family activities, lunch and entertainment.
