Increase in Incidents of Cell Phone Theft

Over the past few months we have experienced an increase in thefts of cell phones. Many of these incidents involve victims distracted by texting or talking on their cell phones while walking outside our facilities. In several cases groups of juveniles approach the distracted victim from behind and snatch the phone from their hands or even rob the victim if they resist.

To reduce your chances of becoming the victim of a cell phone theft or robbery, Maryland Capitol Police offers the following safety tips:

• If at all possible, DO NOT walk down the street talking or texting on your cell phone.
• Always be aware of your surroundings. Thieves may be watching you.
• Keep your cell phone out of sight. Don't hang it from your purse or jacket.
• Ensure your cell phone is enabled with a security password.
• Switch the ringer off to avoid attracting the attention of thieves.
• Never loan your cell phone to a stranger. In case of an
emergency, offer to make the call for them.
• Consider using hands-free technology.
• Never leave your cell phone unattended.
