Update on shooting in front of El Cerrito High School
Today, March 20, at approximately 2:43 pm, an El Cerrito Police School Resource Officer responded to a report of shots fired in front of the El Cerrito High School. He exited the school and found the victim on Lincoln Ave., at Ashbury Ave.
The victim, an adult male, was not affiliated with the high school. He suffered from two gunshot wounds. The victim refused medical attention and left for the hospital with relatives.
Officers responded to reports of suspects fleeing the area, made by witnesses in the aftermath of the shooting. Two juveniles were detained in the area after being identified as associates in the shooting. Officers created a separate perimeter around four residential blocks after residents reported a group of 4 suspicious males climbing over their fences, directly following the shooting.
The El Cerrito Police Department cleared the houses and yards with the help of police dogs and the San Pablo, Richmond, and Kensington Police Departments. The officers did not locate any additional suspects. The California Highway Patrol assisted units on the ground by providing aerial reconnaissance.
During the search for suspects, several area schools were placed on lockdown.
The El Cerrito Police Department is working with the victim and other investigative sources to identify the suspects in this incident. Anyone with information about the shooter is encouraged to contact the El Cerrito Police Department non-emergency dispatch line at (510) 237-3233.
