The following is an update to the previous message in reference to the unsafe conditions with the ice caverns and ice along Lake Michigan(

Those traveling to Lake Michigan in Muskegon will note the BEACH CLOSED signs and caution tape at the entrance to Pere Marquette Park. Please note that the purpose of this closure is to deter citizens from going out onto the unstable ice flows. The park is open to other static activities.

Public Safety Departments in the county along with the U.S. Coast Guard are warning of the dangerous conditions and are monitoring as the conditions change by the day due to the warming temperatures.

Original Message from 3/9/2015

The Muskegon County Sheriff's office along with the Muskegon Department of Public Safety and the U.S. Coast Guard have deemed that the ice cavern formations on Lake Michigan in the Muskegon area are unsafe. Conditions are changing rapidly and even though the ice caverns as well as the packed snow may look safe, the area is has been found to be honeycombing.

It is strongly advised that people do not venture out onto Lake Michigan or into the cavern formations for the remainder of the season. It is extremely dangerous at this time and will become even more so in the coming days.

We wish everyone to remain safe and alive
