Daggett - Barstow Deputies arrest a suspect in Daggett for Felony Evading and Possession of Stolen Property

INCIDENT: Felony Evading; Possession of Stolen Property
LOCATION: National Trails Highway and "B" Street, Daggett
SUSPECT(S): Donald Brooks, age 34, a resident of Yermo, CA
SUMMARY: On February 24, 2015, at approximately 5:00 p.m., deputies from the Barstow Sheriff’s Station received information a vehicle taken in a residential burglary on Monday, February 23rd, was in the community of Daggett. Deputies responded the area, Deputy Hancock located a vehicle matching the stolen vehicle off of Upton and “B” Street in Daggett, driven by a white male adult. The vehicle did not have license plates attached. Deputy Hancock attempted a traffic stop for CVC 5200 – No License Plates Displayed. As he turned on his overhead red and blue lights, the driver of the car sped away and led deputies on a high speed pursuit.
The driver of the vehicle led deputies east on National Trails Highway at speeds over 100 mph. A few miles later, the driver turned north on Hidden Springs and drove north of the Daggett Airport to the Mojave Riverbed. The pursuit ended at the riverbed when the suspect vehicle became disabled. The driver fled the vehicle and hid behind some bushes. Deputies had to slow down due to the desert terrain and caught up to the vehicle after it became disabled. Deputies conducted a foot search of the area. Deputy Korkotsakis located the suspect hiding behind a ravine. He was taken into custody without further incident and identified as Donald Brooks, age 34, of Yermo. Deputies discovered Brooks was on supervised probation for CVC10851 – Vehicle Theft as a result of California Assembly Bill 109.
As part of Governor Jerry Brown’s Realignment Plan, or Assembly Bill 109, to comply with a U.S. Supreme Court decision requiring the state to lower its prison population by 30,000; offenders with non-violent, non-sexual and non-serious convictions will serve reduced sentences in county jails and be placed on local supervision through county Probation.
Brooks was booked into the Barstow Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail for PC496(d)a – Possession of Stolen Property and CVC 2800.2 - Felony Evading. San Bernardino County Probation also placed a No Bail hold for a probation violation. Deputies confirmed the vehicle Brooks drove was, in fact, the vehicle taken in the Residential Burglary.
