Upland Police Department Press Release - Murder arrest for fatal traffic collision 
VICTIM: Ortiz, Stephen AGE: 22 CITY OF RESIDENCE: Montclair
On February 12, 2015 officers from the Upland Police Department Traffic Unit arrested Kamal Maranon at his home in Upland for murder. Maranon was the driver in a solo vehicle collision which occurred on October 21, 2014 at about 12:05 am.
Maranon was driving westbound in the 1300 block of E. San Bernardino Rd at a high rate of speed when he collided with several objects including a large tree. The collision resulted in the death of one of the four vehicle occupants. Two of the other occupants, including Maranon, sustained major injuries. The fourth occupant sustained minor injuries. Maranon is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.
Maranon’s arrest was delayed for several months while he recovered from the injuries he sustained in the collision.
