Lorain County Sheriff, Phil Stammitti would like to make the citizens of Lorain County aware of telephone scams. The most recent scam the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office has handled is the telephone calls from a male, identifying himself as Frank Shapiro, Fraud Detective of Lorain County Sheriff Office,

It appears that this male is contacting individual’s relatives in attempt to obtain personal information of a family relative. The male will leave a toll free 888 phone number with a case number with the relative to have the person they are looking for to call them back. This appears to be a good telephone number, but no matter what option you pick from the automatic system, you end up going to a Steve Shapiro voicemail to leave a message. This appears to be a fraudulent company.

It is highly suggested that if you get a call like this, get the contact information of the person calling, a telephone number to call them back at. Please do not give out any personal information to anyone over the telephone. If you are still unsure, get the information and call what every agency the person is portraying to be form to confirm they are legitimate. Also be cautious of what you post on social media, the suspects could be using this information to obtain information to do these types of scams.

Lorain County Sheriff’s Office advises that if you have had a scam occurred to notify your local law enforcement agency and make them aware of the situation.
