Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 01-19-15 at 5:13 a.m., Officer Jaime Bermudez conducted a traffic stop in the area of Castle Street and Abbot Avenue on a subject riding a bicycle without proper reflectors or lighting. The subject was carrying a large mannequin punching bag and a black duffle bag. Officer Bermudez saw that the subject had bloodshot watery eyes, an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person, as well as a large amount of fresh blood on both of his hands and bicycle. Officer Bermudez asked the subject to put the punching bag and duffle bag on the ground and noticed the punching bag had small broken pieces of glass on it, as well as smeared blood. When asked about his bloody hands and where he got the mannequin punching bag, the subject said he fell of his bike and found the items on the side of the road. Officer Bermudez checked the bag and realized it belonged to the Charles Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy on Mission Street. Other officers checked the business and found it was burglarized. Officer Bermudez placed the subject, a 22-year old Daly City resident, under arrest for burglary.

On Tuesday, 01-20-15 at 4:49 p.m., Officer Bryce Lickness was dispatched to the area of Whittier Street and Mission Street on a report of a strong armed robbery. The 16-yr old Daly City resident said he was taking the Sam Trans bus from San Francisco to Daly City and saw a subject staring at him. He said he got off the bus and put on his headphones while walking home. The victim said a few moments later, the subject he saw on the bus grabbed the top of his backpack and demanded the victim give him his phone. The victim said the subject pushed him to the ground. and took his phone and ran away. The victim provided a description of the subject, and Officer Garrett Larsen who was circulating the area for the suspect saw the subject and two others. The phone was in the subject’s possession. The subjects, all 16-year old Sacramento residents, were arrested. The first subject was arrested for robbery and misappropriation of lost property, and the two other subjects were arrested for obstructing a peace officer by giving the officer false names. The victim was unharmed.

On Tuesday, 01-20-15 at 11:00 p.m., a liquor store clerk on Hillside Boulevard was the victim of an armed robbery. The 53-year old clerk said two subjects walked into the store, and one pointed a silver semi-automatic handgun at him, demanded the cash and threatened to shoot him. Fearing for his life, the clerk gave the subject the money. The subject then asked for a bottle of Hennessy. The second subject stood by the first subject and didn’t say anything. They both then fled the store. With the assistance of the South San Francisco Police Department, detectives were able to identify the suspects, both 19-year old South San Francisco residents. Detectives executed a search warrant and located the gun used in the robbery, as well as the clothing they had worn. Both of the subjects were arrested for robbery, conspiracy, participation in a street gang, and for a felon in possession of a firearm.

On Thursday, 01-22-15 at 11:53 p.m., officers responded to a call of a stabbing at the Geneva Motel. The 43-year old victim said one of his son’s friends stabbed him in the stomach with a pair of scissors. This occurred after a small argument. The subject fled, and the victim was transported to San Francisco General Hospital. A few hours later, the 20-year old suspect turned himself in at the police station. He was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and for a probation violation.

On Sunday, 01-25-15 at 9:11 p.m., Officer Gregory Grogan and Officer Noah Serbin conducted a stop near Val’s Restaurant on Junipero Serra Boulevard on a subject riding a bicycle without a mounted light. The subject, a 39-year old transient, was on probation with a search and seizure clause. The officers conducted a probation search and found a punch tool in the subject’s front pocket. Officer Serbin asked the subject if he knew what a punch tool was used for, and he said, “Yes, but I did not use it to break any windows”. At that point, the subject broke loose from Officer Grogan and stuffed an unknown substance in his mouth. The subject began to violently resist the officers, and officers were able to detain him. The subject later confessed he swallowed three oxycodone pills and came to Daly City on BART from San Francisco in hopes of pan handling near In N Out. Officers searched the subject’s backpack and found pepper spray. Officers arrested the subject for being a convicted felon in possession of pepper spray, possession of a burglary tool, resisting a police officer, destroying/concealing evidence and for a probation violation.

Scams/Other

Water Department Scam:

On Tuesday, 01-20-15 at 11:00 a.m., a 93-year old Daly City resident was the victim of a theft of a large amount of jewelry from her home. The victim said a man entered her residence on Bismark Street through an open garage door while she was picking up a box outside and told her he was with the Water Department. The victim said the man said there was a broken pipe down the street and urine in the water. The suspect turned on the water in the garage and then led the woman to her backyard and had her run the water hose, telling he her he was flushing out the pipes. The victim said she left a pot on the stove upstairs and didn’t want it to overboil. The suspect said he’d go upstairs to turn off the stove and quickly returned. Later that day, the victim realized a pouch in her dresser wasn’t in the right place and then realized some of her jewelry was missing. The victim said the suspect was on the cell phone and believed another subject went upstairs while she was talking to the first suspect and took jewelry from inside the residence. The first suspect is described as a white male between 18-23 years old, approximately 6’0” tall, 250 lbs with a “husky build”, slicked back hair and wearing a black “letterman” jacket and dark pants. The victim could not describe the second subject.

Several of these types of crimes have been popping up in the peninsula, as well as San Francisco. Please be advised that the Daly City Water Department does not show up at a residence unannounced unless specifically called or to report an emergency shutdown. Water Department employees only enter a residence when requested and accompanied by the resident. Moreover, Water Department employees wear an official uniform. Please pass the word and do NOT let anyone in your house without first verifying their legitimacy.
