Sheriff Station Now Accepting Illegal/Prescription Drugs and Sharps Containers #LASD #DrugDropOff

After a brief hiatus, the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station will again be accepting prescription drugs, illegal drugs and Sharps needle containers. There are three clearly marked receptacles just outside the front of the Sheriff's station lobby.

The purpose of this program is to safely dispose of any unused, leftover and expired prescription drugs, as well as providing a safe and anonymous place for anyone to dispose of illegal drugs. According to the DEA’s website, unused medications in homes are commonly stolen, misused, abused, or accidentally ingested.  A survey found that the majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends of the abuser.   Another problem with unused prescription drugs left around the home is they commonly get flushed down the toilet or thrown in the trash, which only contaminates water supplies or results in theft and abuse of prescription drugs. The more narcotics collected in these containers, the less there are being circulated through our community or disposed of improperly.

Please note that all needles MUST BE in a Sharps container. These receptacles will be emptied on a regular basis, however if a container is full, station personnel are unable to accept them over the counter. Please return at a later time if this is the case.

Also please note that only solid narcotics will be accepted, such as pills and patches- all liquids must be disposed of in the proper manner.
