Advisory

Bicycle registration Saturday January 31st.

The Culver City Police Department is now offering bicycle registration free of charge.

Every year, the Culver City Police Department recovers a large number of bicycles.  Many of the bicycles are not reported stolen or owners do not have the serial number for their bicycle. Having the bicycle registration will help law enforcement identify the rightful owner of the bicycle in the event it is stolen and/or recovered by providing us with the necessary information.

The registration is a quick and easy process. The information needed for the registration is the owner’s name, address, phone number, make/model/type/color of the bicycle, serial number and approximate value.  This information would be submitted into the law enforcement databases to identify your bicycle.

Why is a Serial Number Important?

Serial numbers are a set of characters that uniquely identify an object and can be used for traceability purposes. Serial numbers are especially important when reporting stolen items, such as bicycles, to law enforcement in the event those items are found.  Input of serial numbers for stolen items into law enforcement databases increases your chances of having your items identified by law enforcement officers and returned to you.  This also makes it possible to file criminal charges against the person in possession of your items.

If your bicycle is stolen….

Report the theft of your bicycle immediately to the Culver City Police Department (310-837-1221), or the local law enforcement agency where the theft occurred. Have your bicycle registration number and/or other identification information ready.

What if I sell my bicycle?

If you sell your bicycle after you have enrolled with the Culver City Police Department Bicycle Registration Program, contact the Investigations Bureau (310-253-6300) to notify us of the transfer.

Reminders:

  • Always wear a helmet while bicycling. California Law requires all bicyclists under the age of 18 to wear a helmet.
  • Always lock your bicycle. Whether you use a bike lock or place it in a storage space, keep your bicycle under lock and key!
  • Ride your bicycle safely. Always follow the rules of the road and be sure to keep a watchful eye on young riders.

Bicycle owners interested in registering their bicycle(s) can bring them to the Culver City Police Department, 4040 Duquesne Ave, Culver City CA 90232, on Saturday, January 31st, 2015, 10am-3pm. Future registration dates will be announced if you are unable to attend this event.
