Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 12-29-14 at 9:01 p.m., Officer Rodney Chittenden was dispatched to an apartment on the unit block of Forest Grove Drive on a report of a family disturbance in which one family member pepper sprayed another family member. Dispatch advised that one family member was locked outside the residence. Officer Chittenden said a subject was sitting on the front porch when he arrived. The subject said his brother was inside “acting crazy”, and that is why he pepper sprayed him. Officer Chittenden entered the apartment and immediately felt the effects of the pepper spray. Paramedics arrived to examine the victim and his mother for exposure. During the exam, the 34-year old victim said his brother punched him in the back of the head multiple times. The victim’s mother said the suspect made a threat to kill his brother and pointed towards a closet where there were two firearms stored and said, “I am going to get the gun. I don’t care what they do, I want him dead.” The 35-year old suspect was arrested for battery and terrorist threats. Two firearms and two bayonets were taken for safekeeping.

On Wednesday, 12-31-14 at 12:16 a.m., Officer Ben Wagnon was dispatched to a report of a battery at the Classic Bowl Center, and one of the involved parties was unconscious. As Officer Wagnon was approaching the bowling alley, he observed two vehicles quickly leaving the parking lot and was able to obtain the license plate of one vehicle. The bowling alley employees said a group of approximately five Asian males had been involved in an altercation with the victim. Paramedics treated the 23-year old San Francisco resident and transported him to San Francisco General Hospital where he was treated for a fractured nasal cavity and a concussion. The victim’s friend said they were bowling, and a group of Asian males were bowling next to them. He said that one of the males confronted the victim regarding the noise he was making by dropping the ball onto the floor and then pushed the victim. The victim attempted to push back, but the suspect punched him, causing him to fall to the ground. Officers determined the registered owner of the vehicle that Officer Wagnon saw speeding out of the parking lot was the one who punched the victim. Officers then arrested the suspect, a 29-year old South San Francisco resident, for battery.

On Saturday, 01-03-15 at 1:55 a.m., Officer Tiffany Cook and Officer Karen Douglas were on patrol in the area of Junipero Serra Boulevard and John Daly Boulevard and noticed a van swerving and weaving without using the signal lights. The stopped the vehicle at Geneva Avenue and San Jose Avenue. Officer Douglas asked the driver if he had consumed an alcoholic beverage prior to driving, and he admitted to consuming a half of a bottle of beer a couple of hours prior. The officer asked the driver if she could search his person and vehicle, and he consented. Officer Jaime Bermudez who speaks Spanish responded to the scene to translate. When asked for identification, the subject reached into his front pocket as if looking for the identification, and the officer saw a blue card in the subject’s pocket. The card was a Wells Fargo Visa card with a name that wasn’t the driver’s. The subject said it belonged to his friend but was unable to provide the friend’s name. Officer Bermudez conducted some field sobriety tests on the subject and determined he was not under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. The officers searched the vehicle and found a backpack containing nine cell phones and another credit card not belonging to the subject. One of the phones had a message “This phone is lost” with a contact number attached. Officer Douglas contacted the number listed and the owner said her iPhone was stolen from her purse while at a restaurant in San Francisco. Officer Bermudez asked the suspect about the iPhones and how he obtained them. The subject said he gave his friend money in exchange for the phones and intended to sell them at a flea market. The subject said the credit cards were left in the vehicle from a friend who borrowed the vehicle. Officers arrested the 29-year old San Francisco resident for possession of stolen property and the use of an access card without consent.

On Saturday, 01-03-15 at 7:42 p.m., Officer Shane Hart was conducting a business check at the Motorville Motel and contacted a subject inside a vehicle in the parking lot. Officer Hart smelled marijuana emanating from the vehicle. The officer asked the subject about it, and he said he was a medical marijuana patient and produced a medical marijuana card. The officer asked if he had anything illegal in his car, and the subject gave consent for the officer to search it. Officer Hart found a 9mm handgun concealed in the center console. The subject, a 20-year old San Francisco resident, was arrested for carrying a concealed/loaded firearm while not the registered owner, carrying a concealed/unregistered firearm with ammo, carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle, and for committing a felony while out on bail.

Robberies

There were three robberies during the past week. One subject was arrested.

On Tuesday, 12-30-14 at 11:20 p.m., Officer Kenneth Kim was dispatched to the police station on a report of a “cold” robbery. The 37-year old victim said he was returning to his car on the 100 block of Bruno Avenue with his friend’s iPad in hand when he said he “felt a flash”, fell to the ground, opened his eyes and realized the iPad was missing. He drove to the police station to report the incident and had no injuries.

On Thursday, 01-01-15 at 1:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the BART station on a report of a robbery. Officers were unable to locate any parties. Shortly after, Officer Bonnie Shiu contacted a subject at John Daly Boulevard and Mission Street who said the robbery actually took place on the unit block of Los Olivos Avenue. The 19-year old victim said he was at a house party and used the bathroom. He said after he exited the bathroom, a suspect who was standing outside the door was upset with him and wanted to talk to the victim. The suspect started arguing with the victim and then stood up and pulled out a knife from his pocket, flipped open the knife, made a slashing motion to his arm, brought the knife to his throat and slowly slid it up to his chin. At that point, the suspect grabbed the victim’s gold necklace and yanked it off his neck. He then put the necklace into his pocket and told him to leave. The victim complied but stated he wanted his chain back. The chain was recovered in the residence. Officers arrested the 20-year old suspect from San Francisco for robbery.

On Friday, 01-02-15 at 3:00 p.m. Officer Kelly Lemere and Officer Dave Uziel were dispatched to the 600 block of Villa Street on a report of a female who had been robbed at gunpoint. The victim said she and her husband were walking to go inside their apartment building when they saw two subjects, described as 20-40 year old African American males, 5’5”, one slender and one heavy set. The victim said her husband asked the subjects who they were looking for, and they both produced black handguns and told the victims to give them everything. The suspects pulled the victim’s purse from her arm, and the victim said she shoved her cell phone down her pants so the suspect couldn’t get it. The victim said she screamed for help, but the suspect hit her in the back of the head with the gun. The other suspect took her husband’s wallet. Both suspects fled in silver Mercedes Benz S500 that was parked outside of the neighboring building. The 38-year old victim was transported to Seton Medical Center to be treated for a laceration to the top of her head. The 52-year old husband was unharmed, but their 6-year old son witnessed this incident. This case has been assigned to investigators.
