California Drought Promts State of Emergency-How To Help Conserve Water #LACoWater #LASD
With California facing one of the most severe droughts on record, Governor Brown has already declared a State of Emergency and directed state officials to take all necessary actions to prepare for water shortages. While statewide residential water usage has decreased by 9.8, there is still a drastic need to conserve this precious resource. Here are some easy tips that everyone can do in their home to save water (and also lower your utility costs!)
1. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.
2. Plug the sink when shaving instead of letting the water run.
3. When running a bath, plug the bathtub before turning on the water. Adjust the temperature as the tub fills.
4. While at home or staying in hotels, reuse your towels (kitchen and bath).
5. Fix your leaks. One drip every second adds up to 5 gallons a day.
6. Reuse your pasta cooking liquid and fish tank water- Drain your pasta water into a large pot and once it cools, you can use it to water your plants.
7. Reuse nutrient-rich water used from draining fish tanks to water your plants.
8. Hand-washing a lot of dishes? Fill up your sink with water, instead of letting it run the whole time that you’re scrubbing.
9. Don’t run the dishwasher or washing machine until they’re full.
10. Designate one glass for your drinking water each day, or refill a water bottle. This will cut down on the number of glasses to wash.
11. Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants to slow evaporation of moisture while discouraging weed growth.
12. Water during the early parts of the day; avoid watering when it's windy.
