Drive Sober or get Pulled Over

Chula Vista, CA – The Chula Vista Police Department Traffic Division, National City Police Department Traffic Division and South Bay DUI Probation Unit conducted a DUI / Drivers License Checkpoint and Saturation Patrol on 12-27-14, in the 1300 block of East 30th Street, bordering the city of Chula Vista and National City. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

DUI/Drivers License checkpoints have been shown to lower DUI deaths and injuries. A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Ninety Percent of California drivers approve of checkpoints.

On 12-27-14 in the city of Chula Vista,
701 vehicles traveled thru the checkpoint
459 vehicles were screened
4 drivers conducted field sobriety tests
1 driver was arrested for driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage
7 drivers were cited for driving on a suspended driver’s license
4 drivers were cited for driving when unlicensed
11 vehicles were impounded
7 citations were issued for various traffic violations

In addition to the DUI / Drives License Checkpoint the Chula Vista Police Department Traffic Division also conducted 2 DUI Saturation Patrols on 12-31-14, (New Years Eve) and on 01-03-15 to welcome in the first weekend of the new year.

On 12-31-14
25 traffic stops / contacts were conducted
8 drivers conducted field sobriety tests
3 drivers was arrested for driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage.
1 bicyclist was arrested for being under the influence of drugs.
2 drivers were cited for driving on a suspended driver’s license
1 drivers were cited for driving when unlicensed
3 vehicles were impounded
13 citations were issued for various traffic violations

On 01-03-15
46 traffic stops / contacts were conducted
3 drivers conducted field sobriety tests
1 driver was arrested for driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage.
3 drivers were cited for driving on a suspended driver’s license
2 vehicles were impounded
26 citations were issued for various traffic violations

The Chula Vista PD will be conducting additional DUI/Drivers License Checkpoints & Saturation Patrols through out the remainder of the year in our ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries upon our streets and highways.
