#LASD Yellow LASD Stun Bag Shotgun Missing between the San Fernando Valley and Hollywood

A public safety alert has been issued by the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station after a bean bag shotgun was reported missing from the trunk of a patrol car. The gun was reported missing after deputies drove from Agoura Hills to Hollywood.

At about 7:30 AM, Saturday, January 3, 2015, two Lost Hills Sheriff's Station deputies placed a stun bag shotgun with yellow markings on it in a black canvas carrying case into the trunk of their patrol vehicle at the station in Agoura Hills. They then left the station to handle an area child abuse call that was reported at a hospital in Hollywood.

The deputies drove eastbound from the sheriff's station at 27050 Agoura Road, turned northbound onto Las Virgenes Road and entered the eastbound 101 freeway in Calabasas. They continued eastbound on the 101 freeway and entered the southbound 405 freeway. They exited Skirball Center Drive on the 405 freeway and re-entered the northbound 405 freeway. From the northbound 405 freeway, they drove onto the southbound 101 freeway until at about 8:30 AM when they exited at Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

The deputies stopped at the 101 freeway exit ramp and Sunset Blvd., where they were flagged down by a passerby who told them their trunk was ajar. The deputies turned east on Sunset Boulevard and pulled over. They got out of their patrol car and saw the trunk was ajar about 2-3 inches. An inventory revealed the bean bag shotgun and its carrying case were no longer in the trunk. All other equipment was still in the trunk.

Lost Hills Sheriff's Station deputies, Malibu/Lost Hills Search and Rescue Team deputies, and a Los Angeles County Sheriff's helicopter crew conducted an extensive search of the route the deputies had traveled. CHP and LAPD officers were notified and assisted. The bean bag shotgun and carrying case were not located.

The shotgun is loaded with four bean bag shells but can operate as a regular gun if loaded with live shotgun shells. It has a chrome colored barrel with a yellow stock. The yellow coloring on the gun is very visible. The shotgun is stamped "Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department." There is a piece of white tape on the firearm with “LHS 03” in black ink. The shotgun is in a black canvas carrying bag. (A photo of a similar shotgun and carrying case is available).

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is very concerned about finding this missing shotgun. The search is ongoing. The cause of the loss is under investigation, including to determine if the trunk latch was somehow blocked, if the trunk was not fully closed, or if the trunk latch somehow disengaged in transit.
