**Update** Death Investigation, Green Pleasure Pier, Avalon, #LASD Homicide Bureau
Sheriff's Homicide Detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in the Green Pleasure Pier, Avalon.
Detectives learned that on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at approximately 10:55 PM, several boats broke free from their moorings during a storm. Deputies from Avalon Station and personnel from the City of Avalon Harbor Department, were working together to secure the loosed boats. One of the Harbor Department’s boats came perilously close to hitting rocks, so one of the patrolman jumped from the vessel to get to safety. Two deputies attempted to rescue him from the water but were unsuccessful; the patrolman became lodged between the vessel and the rocks under the turbulent waves and could not be reached.
At approximately 6:30 this morning Avalon Station personnel received a call regarding a body found in the water. Deputies recovered the body and found that it was not the body of the patrolman, but a second male victim.
At 11:00 AM Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau Emergency Services Detail divers recovered the body of the patrolman.
The cause of death for the victims will be determined by the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner personnel. Their identities will not be released until the next of kin have been notified.
There is no further information available at this time.
