Advisory

Warning re: recent utility phone scam

Today at least three businesses have been targeted by a utility phone scam and the North Aurora Police Department would like to help prevent you from becoming a victim of this scam.

Scammers phoned two businesses in the 300 blk. of N. Randall Rd. and then another business in the 900 blk. of Oak St. claiming to be representatives of ComEd.  They informed all three businesses that their electricity would be turned off unless they paid with pre-paid money cards immediately.  The calls came from 801-732-7525 and 800-697-3115.  None of the businesses fell for the scam and instead called police.

A press release on the ComEd website informs consumers that, “Representatives from

ComEd always carry proper identification and never ask customers for cash or personal financial information. Customers can verify if a ComEd worker is in the area or whether a caller is an employee by calling 1-800-EDISON1.”  ComEd also offers some tips to avoid being scammed:

  • Never provide your social security or personal information to anyone initiating contact with you claiming to be a ComEd representative or requesting you to send money to another person or entity other than ComEd.
  • Always ask to see a company photo ID before allowing any utility worker into your home or business.
  • Be skeptical of individuals wearing clothing with old or defaced company logos.  If you have any doubts, ask to see a company photo ID.  If you are at all concerned or suspicious that the individual may not be from ComEd, call 1-800-EDISON1.
  • Never make payment for services to anyone coming to your door.

Keep in mind also, that scammers may use a technique called Caller ID Spoofing where they falsify the caller ID display so that it appears they are calling from a legitimate business or entity when they are really not.

The North Aurora Police Department urges you to follow these tips to avoid being scammed.  If you are approached with a similar scam, please report the incident to your local police department.
