Advisory

Important message regarding recent protest activity in Emeryville

Tuesday, December 9, 2014 – Community Message

The City of Emeryville wants to assure Emeryville residents and
businesses that our Police Department and other City staff is
prepared to address any disturbances that may arise from the
continuing demonstrations that have recently occurred in the
area.

Yesterday evening, the advance of 1,000-1,500 demonstrators on
I-80 was halted by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) at
Powell Street in Emeryville. CHP reports that over 150
individuals involved in the confrontation on the freeway were
arrested and moved off the freeway to a safe area behind the
Powell Street Plaza where they were processed for transport to
Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, while the freeway was reopened at
approximately 9:58 pm.

At this time, approximately 500 demonstrators moved to our
City streets and Emeryville Police requested mutual aid and
several agencies responded. The demonstration lasted from
approximately 9:30 pm to midnight. At all times while in
Emeryville, the crowd was generally peaceful and non-violent;
however, from midnight on, there were a small handful of
individuals who were spray painting buildings, throwing glass,
overturning dumpsters and setting fire to dumpsters.

We hope that any future demonstrations remain peaceful. As is
their mission, Emeryville Police will continue to facilitate the
safe and peaceful movement of demonstrations in our City. To
aid our Police Department, the City asks that Emeryville
businesses make sure to update their emergency contact card
and be prepared in case of vandalism to have someone available
to respond to secure your business. Please contact Emeryville
Police at 596-3700 for non-emergencies and 911 for emergencies.

Emeryville Police will continue to work with other jurisdictions
in the region to continue to keep this community safe and
facilitate peaceful protest.
