Attempted Murder on Highway 395 in Red Mountain

DATE/TIME: November 30, 2014 at 2:11 pm

INCIDENT: Attempt Murder

LOCATION: Highway 395, Red Mountain

SUSPECT: Strather Wise, 46 year old white male and resident of Red Mountain

VICTIM(S): 1. Shawn Hawk, 39 year old white male and resident of Canyon Country
2. Greg Thompson, 56 year old white male and resident of Red Mountain

SUMMARY:
On November 30, 2014, at 2:11pm, a civil dispute occurred over property at 713 Hwy 395 in Red Mountain. At that location, Strather Wise threw kerosene on Shawn Hawk, backed up and poured kerosene on the ground then lit the kerosene on fire. Hawk was able to step away from the burning kerosene and was not burned, however it caused a large fire in the front yard of 713 Hwy 395.

Wise walked north on Hwy 395 to another residence where he kicked open the door and stole two shotguns. Wise fired one of the shotguns toward 713 Hwy 395 where Hawk and other people were standing. No one was injured by the gunfire.

A neighbor, Greg Thompson, heard the gunfire and saw smoke; he went to investigate the fire. Wise confronted Thompson and the two argued, then Wise hit Thompson in the arm with the shotgun. Wise walked to the middle of Hwy 395 then turned and fired the shotgun at Thompson who was approximately 15 feet away. Thompson was struck in the lower abdomen. Wise pointed the shotgun at cars that had stopped on Hwy 395 and witnesses who were outside their residences. Wise ran north on Hwy 395 where he hid the shotgun inside a residence. He was contacted at the residence by law enforcement, arrested and transported to jail.

Thompson was airlifted to a local trauma center where he received treatment for his injuries. He is expected to make a full recovery. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted by officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and deputies from Kern County Sheriff’s Department.
