Police Canine Suffers Injury - Returned to Full Duty
On Wednesday, November 26th, 2014 at approximately 1130 hours, El Cerrito officers conducted a traffic stop on Carlson Boulevard, near Shasta Ave. One of the occupants of the vehicle was on active parole through the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
A police K9 Unit was summoned to the scene to assist with the investigation. Koda, one of two police canines used by the ECPD, responded with his handler and began a search of the vehicle.
During the search of the vehicle, Koda located a small amount of suspected cocaine, and in the process inhaled a small amount of the suspected cocaine.
Officers subsequently arrested Mone’ Sellers, a 29 year old female from San Pablo. Koda was transported to an emergency veterinary clinic where he tested positive for the presence of a stimulant. Koda was treated, fully recovered, and returned to full duty on November 27th.
Police canines are frequently used to assist officers in the detection of hidden drugs in vehicles. While every effort is made to ensure the safety of the canines, the discovery of suspected drugs can lead to this situation. Koda is cross trained in handler protection, searches, and drug detection.
