Santa Clara Police Department Receives Grant from Office of Traffic Safety for Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety

The Santa Clara Police Department has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for a year-long program of special enforcements and public awareness efforts to prevent pedestrian and bicycle related deaths and injuries. The Santa Clara Police Department will use the funding as part of the city’s ongoing commitment to keep our roadways safe and improve the quality of life through both enforcement and education.

“There are so many positive reasons to ride your bike. It is great exercise, it’s good for the environment and it is fun. I encourage individuals to ride, follow the rules of the road and be safe,” stated Michael J. Sellers, Police Chief.

A review of the Office of Traffic Safety 2011 rankings reveal collision rates involving pedestrians and bicycles in the City of Santa Clara are quite significant and appear to show an increasing trend in recent years. This grant funding will provide opportunities to conduct pedestrian crosswalk operations, host educational workshops in the community, facilitate two bicycle rodeos, purchase bicycle safety materials and helmets, as well as manage large bicycle rides that come through our city.
