Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting which occurred at 2:39 A.M. on Sunday, November 16, 2014.

Detectives have learned that at 2:20 A.M., the victim, a 32-year-old male, was walking through a business parking lot in the 1100 block of Atlantic Boulevard, East Los Angeles.  Suddenly, the victim noticed a light-colored SUV driving through the same parking lot.  The occupants of the car were Suspect #1, who was the passenger and is described as a 26-year-old male, and Suspect #2, who was the driver and is described as a 57-year-old male. 

Suspect #2 drove the vehicle alongside the victim and Suspect #1 pointed a handgun at the victim.  No words were exchanged and the suspects drove away, north on Atlantic Boulevard.  The victim got into his car and followed the suspects while calling 9-1-1 to report the incident.  As the victim followed the suspects in his vehicle, he saw a sheriff’s patrol car and flagged down the deputies to tell them what happened. 

The deputies searched the area and located the suspects’ vehicle.  When they attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the suspects’ vehicle slowed down and Suspect #1 exited the passenger side.  The car continued a short distance and parked in the driveway of an apartment complex in the 5300 block of Verona Street, East Los Angeles. 

After the car parked, Suspect #1 started to pull a handgun out of his pants and point it in the direction of the deputies.  At approximately the same time, Suspect #2 exited the driver’s side of his vehicle and stood behind Suspect #1.   At that time, a deputy involved shooting occurred.

Both suspects were struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene.  The suspect’s handgun was recovered from the scene and found to be a replica .45 caliber handgun.

No other suspects were involved or are outstanding.

Whenever an Officer-Involved Shooting occurs, involving Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies, and it results in a fatality of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Offices of the L.A. Co. District Attorney and the L.A. Co. Coroner, in addition to Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.  The Office of the Inspector General is also present.  Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.
