When Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Les Trull sat down at the Biscailuz Center to watch the graduation ceremony of Custody Assistant Class #81 on October 9th, 2014, he was immediately taken back almost 32 years. Back to when he graduated from Sheriff’s Deputy Academy Class #212, on the very same spot. Now, however, he would be watching his only daughter Alexandra graduate.
A lot has happened since "Dad" graduated. Both for the Trull Family and the Sheriff’s Academy. The Biscailuz Center, named after the 27th Sheriff of Los Angeles County, Eugene Biscailuz, was at one time the primary training facility for the LASD. Since then, however, the facility had fallen into disrepair and many of its buildings were deem uninhabitable due to earthquake and other damage that had occurred over the years. The Sheriff’s Training Academy was then moved to the Sheriff’s STAR Center in Whittier, California, in 1984.
Earlier this year however, LA County Sheriff John Scott presided over the rededication of the Biscailuz Training Center after an extensive renovation, and the graduation of the first Deputy Sheriff Academy at the center in almost 30 years. Lieutenant Trull was young deputy of only 5 years tenure when his eldest child Alexandra was born. Alexandra Trull excelled in her studies during her school years, and when it came time to find a job, she knew right where she wanted to go. Alexandra was part of the first Custody Assistant class to graduate from the newly dedicated training center.
Alexandra graduated being named the “Top Academic Recruit”. The Academic Recruit is the Custody Assistant Trainee that exhibits the highest overall academic score during the challenging 8 week course. Additionally, this was this first Custody Assistant class to receive metal badges. The Custody Assistant job classification, commonly known as “C/A’s”, is a professional staff (civilian) job title that works primarily in the LA County Jails. Until now, all of their olive green uniforms used only a cloth badge. This class was the first to receive the numbered metal badges, to be worn with their dress uniforms.
Always a distinction is the pinning of the badge at the graduation ceremony. Usually, the graduate selects a family member or member of the law enforcement community that they hold in high regard to pin on their badge. For Alexandra, the choice was one and the same person. Her father, Lieutenant Trull, proudly pinned her badge on signifying the end of basic recruit training, and a rite of passage into the ranks of the storied Sheriff’s Department. Lieutenant Trull, who is currently a Watch Commander with the Sheriff’s Transit Bureau South, part of the Transit Policing Division, recalled that his daughter was always an intelligent and studious child. “Her mother and I are very proud of what she’s been able to accomplish. We never dreamed that she would excel in the academy like she has. It was special for me to remember back to when I graduated from the “Hill” (Biscailuz Center). And now we’ll always have the memory of Alexandra being part of the first C/A class to have graduated from here too!”
