Celebrate Our Veterans: Santa Ana Public Library presents special veterans events in November / Honrando A Nuestros Veteranos: la Biblioteca Pública de Santa Ana presenta varios eventos especiales en honor a nuestros veteranos durante el mes noviembre

SANTA ANA, CA – Karl Marlantes, Vietnam veteran and author of What It Is Like to Go to War, stated, “One of the things we have to get over as a culture is avoiding talking about the fact that we’ve been at war…..We have to step up to the plate and say: We’ve been at war and we’re willing to hear what it was like for our veterans, the people who have done the fighting for us.”

The Santa Ana Public Library will present three outstanding events during November for veterans and the whole community. We will listen to our veterans’ stories and honor them for the sacrifices they have made for our nation.

These programs are part of the War Comes Home/California Reads initiative. This project seeks to engage Californians in the tough questions about what it means to return from war, and to rejoin one’s community. How will returning soldiers come back into their communities? How can we build bridges of understanding between those who have served and those who have not?

All programs are free. No registration is required.

November 10, 12, and 13: The War Comes Home exhibit, Our Veterans, Our Communities will be open to the public at the Santa Ana Public Library. The Exhibit honors the men and women who gave their youth, and often their lives, to protect our country. Visitors will be able to travel through history as they listen to their voices. Memorabilia, photographs, artifacts, and journals from our local veterans will be on display.

Saturday, November 15: Discussion of Marlantes’ book, What It Is Like to Go to War. The book takes us back to the Vietnam War and offers frank answers to the questions, “What it is like to be a soldier?” “What is it like to face death?” Vietnam U.S. Army veteran, Marvin Wolf, will be the discussion moderator. Highlighting the program will be the screening of the movie We Were Soldiers; based on a true story of the first major battle between the United States and Vietnamese forces and its impact on soldiers and their families. Wednesday, November 19: As part of the statewide initiative War Comes Home, and in partnership with OC Public Libraries and the Bowers Museum, CAL Humanities will be hosting a conversation with best-selling author and Vietnam veteran, Karl Marlantes. Listen to Marlantes as he discusses his book, What It Is Like to Go to War. Program location: Bowers Museum, 2002 N. Main St., Santa Ana, CA Time: 7:30 p.m.

SANTA ANA, CA – Karl Marlantes, veterano de la guerra de Vietnam y el autor del libro What It Is Like To Go To War I (“Como es ir a la Guerra”), expresó: "Una de las cosas que tenemos que superar como una cultura es el no hablar sobre el hecho de que hemos estado en guerra...Tenemos que enfrentar la realidad y declarar: Hemos estado en guerra y estamos dispuestos a escuchar a nuestros veteranos, aquellos que pelearon por nosotros. "
La Biblioteca Pública de Santa Ana presentará tres grandes eventos para veteranos y toda la comunidad durante el mes de noviembre. Escucharemos las historias de nuestros veteranos y tendremos la oportunidad de honrarlos por los sacrificios que han hecho por nuestra nación.
Estos programas son parte de la iniciativa War Comes Home: Finding Peace at the Home Front. Este proyecto intenta promover conversaciones en nuestras comunidades sobre lo que significa regresar de la guerra e incorporarse nuevamente en la comunidad. ¿En qué estado volverán los soldados a sus comunidades? ¿Cómo podemos construir puentes de entendimiento mutuo entre aquellos que han servido y aquellos que no?

10, 12 y 13 de noviembre: Todos están invitados a ver la exposición, Nuestros Veteranos, Nuestras Comunidades en la Biblioteca Pública de Santa Ana. La exposición rinde homenaje a los hombres y mujeres que dieron su juventud y sus vidas, para proteger a nuestra nación. Los visitantes podrán viajar a través de la historia al escuchar las voces de veteranos de varias guerras. Recuerdos, fotografías, artefactos y observaciones de nuestros veteranos locales estarán en exhibición. Sábado, 15 de noviembre: Platica sobre el libro de Marlantes, What It Is Like To Go To War (“Como es ir a la Guerra”). El libro nos transporta a la guerra de Vietnam y ofrece sinceras respuestas a las preguntas, "¿Cómo se siente ser un soldado?" "¿Qué se siente al enfrentar la
muerte?" Veterano del conflicto en Vietnam, Marvin Wolf, servirá de moderador durante la discusión. También se presentara la película Éramos Soldados („We Were Soldiers‟) ; basada en la verdadera historia de la primera gran batalla entre las fuerzas de Estados Unidos y Vietnam y el impacto de esta en los soldados y sus familias.
