GTF Arrests Auto Theft Suspect
On Friday October 24th 2014, at 2:50 PM, members of the Regional Gang Task Force (GTF) Region 8 were patrolling the area of El Cerrito, an unincorporated portion of Riverside County. GTF officers observed a red Geo Prizm partially blocking a driveway in the 7800 block of Minnesota Road. When officers checked the license plate on the Geo Prizm through the Department of Motor Vehicles, it was discovered to have been recently stolen out of Anaheim. As officers watched the residence the Geo Prizm was parked in front of, they saw a male subject leave the driveway and walk to a nearby gas station with a gas can. When the male returning a short time later, he was observed entering the Geo Prizm and attempting to drive away.
GTF officers stopped the Geo Prizm as it began to leave southbound on Minnesota Road and arrested the driver. The driver was using a US Postal key in the vehicles ignition switch, was on formal probation, and had a quantity of “shaved keys” in his possession. “Shaved keys” are purposely modified keys, used to defeat vehicle ignition switches and are illegal to possess.
The Geo Prizm was recovered and was later returned to the registered owner.
Arrested was:
Kelly Asad, 45 years out of Corona, for possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property and violation of probation.
