Lansdale Borough Receives $2.7 Million in Grand Funding for East Main Street Streetscape Improvements

Lansdale Borough Officials and staff are pleased to announce that the Borough has been awarded $2.7 million in state funding from Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to be used for significant streetscape improvements along East Main Street.

Site Furnishings of the Streetscape Project will match those of the West Main Street project including:
• Benches
• Trash Receptacles
• Bike Racks
• Light Fixtures and Poles
• Brick Design Accents
• Sidewalk bump-outs at strategic locations for ease and safety of pedestrian movements and traffic calming

The proposed improvements will take place along East Main Street between Broad Street and Greenwood Road providing access and mobility for multimodal transportation. “Upgrading and enhancing East Main Street at this point in time will significantly benefit the various development projects within the Borough and provide clear, measurable benefits to Lansdale,” says Council President Jason Van Dame. “This is great news for the Lansdale Community.”

News of the $2.7 million comes just over a month after the Borough celebrated the “grand opening” of the Pennsylvania Community Transportation Initiative (PCTI) and Lansdale is proud to work again in partnership with state agencies and legislators. By addressing transportation deficiencies and working with these groups and
individuals, the Borough continues to strengthen government-to-government relationships with a result of improved transportation systems. “These projects are excellent examples of how investing in the Borough’s downtown streets promotes growth and reinvestment in surrounding land uses,” expressed State Senator Bob Mensch. “I applaud Borough Council and staff for their continued efforts to revitalize and enhance the community and invest in ‘Main Street’ to promote economic growth.”

While enhancing access to new development projects such as the Madison Lot, the North Penn Commons and the SEPTA parking garage, East Main Street streetscape improvements will also provide connectivity between established Borough locations. Sites such as Memorial Park, Hillcrest Shopping Center and the Lansdale Train Station will directly benefit from enhanced pedestrian routes providing direct connections to transportation. Additionally, visibility will increase along the route for long standing Lansdale businesses, St. Stanislaus Church / Mater Dei School as well as add visibility inviting more business into town.

As a heavily traveled corridor within the Borough and a major gateway to the downtown business district, improvements on East Main Street will promote pedestrian safety, connections and improve the overarching pedestrian environment within the Borough. The goal of this project is to enhance the aesthetics and safety of the Main Street corridor in order to augment existing assets, attract new businesses and accelerate the Borough’s revitalization efforts. According to Borough Manager Timothea M. Kirchner, “The completion of the streetscape project along West Main has shown an improved vitality in our downtown. Continuing with the success of that project, this funding continues the great work of the streetscape from the eastern gateway to Broad Street along with significant improvements to the SEPTA crossing on Main Street.”
