Emergency units were dispatched to westbound I-96 near Sternberg Road at approximately 7:38 a.m. on Wednesday, October 29, 2014, regarding a personal injury crash in which a pedestrian had reportedly been struck by a vehicle.

Emergency responders from Fruitport Township Police Department, Fruitport Township Fire Department, and ProMed Ambulance responded to the scene.

Investigation at the scene revealed a 50-year-old male subject from the Muskegon County area had stopped his vehicle along this stretch of roadway to move a deer from the road. The deer had apparently been struck by a different vehicle and was laying in the road. The vehicle that struck the deer had not stopped at the scene.

While outside his vehicle, the male subject who was attempting to move the deer was injured when he was struck by another vehicle. That vehicle was driven by an 80-year-old Muskegon County man.

The patient was transported from the scene by ProMed Ambulance to Hackley Hospital. He was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Grand Rapids for further medical treatment.

The extent of injuries and current condition of the patient are unknown at this time.

At the time of the crash, it was dark. The posted speed limit on this stretch of road is 70 MPH.

No further information is being released by police at this time.
