Community Advisory – Sexual Assault Reports
Media coverage regarding “Crime Alerts” reporting sexual assaults in the South Campus have understandably generated a high amount of concern today. Below is some additional information regarding these alerts.
Yesterday afternoon, the University of California Police Department (UCPD) notified the Berkeley Police Department (BPD) of an anonymous report which stated, in part, that five students had been drugged and sexually assaulted at the DKE Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity over the past weekend.
UCPD issued a Clery Act Crime Alert yesterday at about 6 PM.
BPD has not received any reports of persons being drugged and/or sexually assaulted at Delta Kappa Epsilon this past weekend, nor has BPD received any reports of persons being drugged or sexually assaulted elsewhere in Berkeley this past weekend. This information was conveyed to UCPD.
Earlier this afternoon, UCPD issued a second Clery Alert regarding a report of a sexual assault at the Theta Delta Chi fraternity. BPD has received no report regarding the second matter, and this information was also conveyed to UCPD.
Under-reporting in sexual assault crimes is a major issue in every community. With this in mind, the Berkeley Police Department urges anyone who has been sexually assaulted to report the crime directly to our Department, so that we have the opportunity to investigate thoroughly and appropriately. The non-emergency number is 981-5900.
The Berkeley Police Department takes all reports of sexual assault very seriously. Sexual assault reports are investigated fully, with respect and concern for the survivor. Sexual assault cases are complex, and demand sensitive and professional investigation.
We continue to work with the University of California Police Department to support our shared mission of public safety.
