Suspect Charged in Robbery, Theft Cases

Charges have been filed against a North Aurora man in a recent robbery of a grocery store in North Aurora.

At approximately 6:07 p.m. on October 4th, patrol officers of the North Aurora Police Department responded to Sunny Food & Liquor, 5 S. Lincolnway, for a report of a robbery.  The suspect implied as well as told the clerk that he had a gun and demanded money from the cash register and the clerk complied.  The suspect then fled the store.  He was described as a white male with a gray hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and light colored shoes.  He also had a white cloth covering his nose/mouth/chin area.

Through follow up investigation, North Aurora Police detectives identified the suspect as 26 year old Jacob A. Harnesk, formerly of the 200 blk. of E. Arrowhead, North Aurora.  He was arrested on an unrelated Theft warrant on October 13th and then subsequently charged in this incident.  After consultation with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, Harnesk was charged with:

  • One count of Aggravated Robbery, a class 1 Felony
  • One count of Robbery, a class 2 Felony.

The theft warrant was the result of two theft incidents reported August 21st and October 2nd in the 200 blk. of E. Arrowhead, where Harnesk used to live with his parents.  A shop vac, jewelry, a kitchen mixer, and a crock pot were stolen in the first incident and a Sony PlayStation was stolen in the second.  Harnesk is accused of stealing these items and later selling them to a pawn shop and a game store in Aurora.  A warrant was issued for two counts of Theft on October 7th in these theft incidents.

He attended a bond hearing yesterday and his bail was set at $50,000 / 10% for the robbery and $25,000 / 10% for the theft.  This means he needs to post $7,500 (for both cases) to be released.  He was transported to the Kane County jail, where he is currently being held.

Aggravated Robbery is the act of taking property from a person when a weapon is implied, but not displayed.  Armed Robbery is the act of taking property from person when armed with a weapon.

Anyone with information about either case is asked to call North Aurora Police detectives at (630) 897-8705, ext. 610.  Anonymous tips can be left by calling (630) 897-8705 and choosing option 3.

All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
